A few days ago, the WHO decreed the end of the health emergency due to Covid-19. Almost immediately, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador made the same decision, but now a new controversy has been generated. all part of one new accusation against Dr. Hugo López-Gatell for mishandling the pandemic. It is also mentioned that it is one of those responsible for the excess mortality in our country.
Mexico decrees the end of the pandemic
In chronological order, on May 9, 2023, the pandemic came to an end in Mexico. The support is that in recent months there has been a drastic decrease in the number of new cases nationwide.
Similarly, the recent wave of Covid-19 starring the Ómicron subvariants has been the least deadly. It has been partly thanks to the high vaccination rate, which has been essential to provide protection and avoid serious illnesses.
Despite all of the above, it has been emphasized that the SARS-CoV-2 virus has not disappeared and could even last forever. With this, something similar to HIV would occur and therefore infections would remain active, although at fairly low numbers.
They launch an accusation against López-Gatell for mishandling the pandemic
In the midst of this panorama, an incident has now been announced that puts the integrity of the Undersecretary of Health at risk. First of all, it is necessary to remember that since 2020 Dr. López-Gatell was appointed in charge of managing the health emergency in Mexico.
Among his responsibilities were designing strategies to deal with this new disease. In addition, his face became important because it was the in charge of offering evening conferences every day to publicize the number of new cases.
That said, now federal judge Arturo Medel Casquera ordered the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) to continue with the investigations against the official. In the past, it had already been accused López-Gatell of mishandling the pandemic although they never prosperedwhile the case has now been revived.
With this in mind, the judicial authority began a new investigation to determine whether or not the Undersecretary of Health incurred in negligence, false reporting and data concealment during the pandemic.
The conflict began in 2022 when the lawyer Javier Coello Trejo filed a criminal complaint. In the document, he blamed the undersecretary for negligent homicide for causing the deaths of thousands of people during the pandemic, including one of his clients.
Although it was not the only complaint, in the end the FGR stopped the investigations and ordered not to investigate López Gatell or to consign the investigation file before a federal judge.
“The prosecution has to continue with its investigative acts. I have mentioned some aspects only by way of illustration, but not limitation, the prosecutor’s office is the one that has in its possession that accumulation of actions that have been implemented and of that accumulation of actions, since they can consult with experts what other action could have been effective or The Mexican government and its officials stopped doing it, as in the case of the corresponding undersecretary.”
Since then, various opinions have been generated about the seriousness of the decisions taken by López-Gatell. Specifically, it is accused that his refusal to use a face mask and the delay in the application of lives cost thousands of lives.
While now the lawyer Coello Trejo reported the new resolution of Judge Medel. Therefore, the FGR was ordered to reopen the case to investigate whether Dr. López-Gatell really handled the pandemic well or not.
