Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan) has confirmed what we have long suspected: The April 3, 2022 chapter did not conclude the story. In fact, at the end of it they announced that there would be a third part that will conclude the final season of the anime. According to official announcement that they shared on social networksthis third part will arrive sometime in 2023, although they did not give more details:
Before this official announcement from MAPPA Studio and NHK (Japanese television network that broadcasts this anime), the community of fans of this anime had been speculating about the format in which this final part of Hajime Isayama’s work would arrive. One of the main theories was that the animation studio would present these final chapters in a movie like Ufotable did with Kimetsu no Yaiba: Demon Slayer – Mugen Train covering a couple of manga chapters..
But where did this idea of the fan community come from? Well, the original manga of Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan) has only 139 chapters, with a couple of extra pages that complement the story.. Until now the final season had reached 130, leaving only 9 more to animate, a figure much lower than expected for an anime season that usually has 12 or 24 episodes.
This difference in the anime may be due to the manga’s ending being controversial and not as beloved as most of the rest of the series. That is why it is not surprising that MAPPA wants to change some points of the source material to show its own version as it has done before.
Where to read Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan) manga ending from?
As we mentioned, the final season (with its first and second parts) has so far 28 episodes that go up to chapter 130 of the manga. From that point, you can read through the service of Crunchyroll or in volume 33 and 34 edited in Spanish.
Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan) volume 33 covers the following chapters showing the disasters caused by Eren Jaeger’s Earth Rumble, specifically the ones that befall Ramzi and Halil, the two children they met at the end of the second part of the final season of the anime:
- 131 – Rumble
- 132 – Wings of Liberty
- 133 – Sinners
- 134 – In the depths of despair
What’s more, we will see how the alliance between the group of Marleyans and the rebels of the Island of Paradis once again face their conflictive past. On the one hand, the talk revolves around how similar their indoctrinations were within their walls, both those of the Liberio district in the Marley Empire and those of the Island of Paradis.
Now that both sides in Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan) are being threatened by Eren Jaeger’s Earth Rumble, they realize their similarities and how their goals, dreams and hopes converge. It is possible that in this part of the adaptation they add the conversation between Magath and Keith Shadis that they omitted in the penultimate chapter of the second part of the final season that contextualizes the feelings of both teachers.
As for volume 34 of the manga, it closes with the last five chapters and a couple of extra pages that conclude the work:
- 135 – Battle of Heaven and Earth
- 136 – Give your hearts
- 137 – Titans
- 138 – A long dream
- 139 – Towards the tree on that hill
This part of Hajime Isayama’s work focuses on the final fight between Armin Arlert, Mikasa Ackerman and Eren Jaeger, along with the entire alliance. This is the most controversial part of the entire Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan) manga, as it places its protagonists in unusual situations..
It is possible that the MAPPA animation studio will make some changes to the original work as it has already done with previous chapters of the anime. However, we will have to wait a year to find out.
Is this really the end of the anime?
Because the animation studio surprised us with the announcement of the third part of the final season, we also can’t say for sure if this is the end of Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan) or not. While the confirmation of this seems to suggest that it is, in fact, the conclusion of the anime series, it is not known if it will actually end the story or if it will continue with any spin-offs or other projects.
