Among the most refreshing summer alternatives, we find the granitas, sorbets and ice creams. We tell you which of these sweets is healthier.
Differences between sorbet, granita and ice cream
Granitas are made practically from fruit and ice, including sugars which are what provide its sweet taste. Its consistency is that of a finely crushed iceresulting therefore very moisturizing and fresh.
For its part, sorbet is also usually based on water and fruit, but its consistency is softer, creamier and lighter and may even be a suitable alternative to drink instead of eating by the spoonful.
The frozenunlike the previous ones, can include ingredients that are sources of fat and protein, such as milk, cream, cheese, yogurt or others, being therefore of a creamy and denser consistency.
Which is healthier?
Considering its preparation, many might think sherbet and slushies are lighter alternatives and healthier than the classic ice cream, which can include various ingredients.
However, all options are generally a source of free or added sugars. Therefore, granitas and sorbets are not always lighter and healthier, but rather, largely depends on its components.
Thus, for example, a sorbet or granita can offer, beyond water, a small amount of fruit and a large proportion of sugars, while a fruit-based ice cream with no added sugar can be more satiating and healthy in nutritional terms, offering even fewer calories.
On the other hand, a dairy- and fruit-based ice cream with no added sugar can be much more satiating than a sherbet or a granita, and just as refreshing but much healthier.
So it should be clear to us that Sorbets and granitas are not always healthier and lighter alternatives rather, the best options will be those without added sugar and with a high percentage of water as well as quality nutrients for the body.
