Selena Gomez has been in the public eye since her childhood, as her career began when she was just 10 years old, when she appeared on the children’s show Barney and his friends. Shortly after, she managed to get a leading role in a Disney series, The Wizards of Waverly PlaceAnd the rest is history.
Many stars who rose to fame as children have spoken out about the negative effects they believe this had on their development and mental health, and Sel is no exception, but she focused on a subject that is not widely talked about: the impact it had on the perception of their own beauty.
“I feel that it did me wrong to put on makeup so young”
Selena has always been one of the most open and honest artists about her physical and mental health issues and since launching her own makeup line, Rare Beauty, she has opened up about how she has struggled with her self-image. She recently talked about how harmful it was for her to start wearing makeup as a child.
I’ve been doing makeup since I was seven years old. I feel like that hurt me. I had professionals doing my makeup and suddenly I could see myself as a 25-year-old when I was 16, she was crazy. Then I was like, ‘Oh, I look so young. It should always be like this. I should try that.’ It just made me question my beauty for what it is.
Because of her job, starting to wear makeup at such a young age was more of a necessity than a joy, but it can definitely have serious consequences on a girl’s self-image, especially when wearing makeup was consistent. It is impossible to deny that we live in a world where appearance is given a lot of importance and celebrities suffer from this pressure even more than ordinary people.
I have fallen victim to the intense trends I see and have sometimes wanted to change my face or get cosmetic work because of it.
Selena is super honest about her struggles and many of her fans they feel closer to her by being able to see her as just another person, suffering from the same insecurities and facing the same pressures to look a certain way as everyone else.
For a long time, the artist has been seen more at peace with herself than ever and we hope she continues like this.
