The reason for the lawsuit was a violation of the rights of Russian users.
A law firm representing the interests of Netflix users filed a class action lawsuit against the American Netflix service in the Khamovnichesky District Court.
The suspension constitutes a violation of the civil code of the Russian Federation, as well as consumer rights laws.
Many important brands of various services announced their departure from the Russian market, after the army of that country invaded Ukraine on February 24, generating the war that has been recorded to date. One of those companies was Netflix, the TV streaming service that suspended its service in Russia in March. which is why a group of users from that country initiated a collective lawsuit against the platform.
According to data released by The Wall Street Journal, when Netflix announced its exit from the Russian market, the platform had just over a million subscribers in that country which, compared to the more than 22o million that it has managed to obtain, did not represent a great loss for them.
Statista reveals that the number of subscribers to the US platform has not stopped growing since the end of the fourth quarter of 2021 already had around 222 million.
Class action lawsuit against streaming giant in Russia
Russian Netflix users launched a class action lawsuit against the streaming platform for leaving the Russian market, demanding compensation of 60 million rubles equivalent to 726,000 dollars.
According to information released by the RIA news agency, “the reason for the lawsuit was a violation of the rights of Russian users due to Netflix’s unilateral refusal to provide services in Russia.”
“Today, a law firm representing the interests of Netflix users filed a class action lawsuit against the American Netflix service with the Moscow Khamovnichesky District Court,” RIA said, citing a statement from the law firm Chernyshov, Lukoyanov & Partners.
So far Netflix has not immediately responded to this demand.
Likewise, the plaintiffs’ lawyers stress that the document “it does not provide for the possibility of unilaterally refusing to fulfill its obligations”.
In that sense, the accusers, the suspension of the streaming platform service “violates the rights of users. It constitutes a violation of the civil code of the Russian Federation, as well as consumer rights laws.
Let us remember that in the face of this escalation of violence, dozens of foreign companies have announced temporary closures of shops and factories in Russia, a reason for which the government of Vladimir Putin has already begun to reject the use of digital platforms such as Instagram or Facebook.
Let us also remember that many Russians have retaliated against the products of the luxury firm Chanel after it prohibited their sale to any citizen of that country. Last week various influencers were recorded cutting their Chanel bags with scissors, and they rejected the phobia against Russians.
