The isometric tactical RPG genre often offers very addictive experiences, especially when combined with the roguelike/roguelite genre as we saw with Into the Breach. The Mexican indie studio bromine Is developing Remnants of the Riftwhich shows the potential to be the next gem in the tactical roguelite genre and is expected to arrive before the end of 2022.
This Tuesday Bromio launched the Remnants of the Rift Kickstarter along with its free demo, available through Steam and Itch.io. However, I have had the opportunity to play the demo since last week and in this time I have convinced myself that it has the potential to be one of the indie jewels of this year and one of the best tactical roguelites.

The premise of the game is as follows: In the world of Remnants of the Rift there is a new dimension known as The Bast, full of resources but also of dangers, reason why different organizations contract mercenaries so that they enter her. You take the role of Morganwho with the help of an interesting cast of characters goes deeper and deeper into The Bast.
Morgan has the necessary skills to survive in The Bast, because this dimension is inhabited by enemies known as Megin, who must be defeated to get the treasures we are looking for. Each game of Remnants of the Rift consists of a field trip to The Bast and these vary depending on which organization you work for.

The premise of Remnants of the RIft is interesting, plus it has captivating characters, a unique visual style and a great soundtrack that fits like a glove. If we add its addictive gameplay to these, we have the necessary ingredients for the next indie gem.
Remnants of the Rift is a Tactical RPG with isometric view and a grid map, very characteristic of the genre, but its gameplay combines turn-based strategy with real-time combat in a very interesting way. Although it is possible to move as you like on the grid, Morgan has the power to stop time, ideal for strategizing and attacking enemies.

Morgan can equip 4 abilities at a time for each descent into The Bast, which she uses to protect the mods that take you to this alternate dimension. If the Megin destroy the modulators, your game ends and you return to the surface with your rewards; your reward increases the further you go down The Bast.
Morgan’s abilities have a cooldown, so plan how to use them with your position, enemies’ position, modulators, and environmental hazards in mind. If you defeat all the Megin you go down to the next floor, with the option to choose between two routes with different rewards. These paths can offer Prana (which serves as money), Mods, Super Mods, and Cores; they can also take you to the store or workshop.
Mods and Super Mods give extra functions to your abilities but they disappear when your game ends. You can upgrade Mods in Juno’s workshop using Cores, or recycle them for Prana to spend in the shop; Super Mods offer more useful effects but cannot be upgraded. It is necessary to have Mods and Super Mods to survive the lower levels of The Bast, as it becomes increasingly difficult.
Control of Remnants of the Rift is simple and its mechanics are very intuitive, so it doesn’t take long before you understand it and get into it. a very fluid and enjoyable game rhythm, which is only possible thanks to its combination of real-time combat and turn-based strategy. There is no telling how enjoyable the gameplay is, so I highly recommend downloading the demo and trying it out for yourself.
Remnants of the Rift is a game developed under the direction of Emmanuel Castro, with the art direction of Colette Gelabert that fits perfectly with the Controvol soundtrack. Remnants of the Rift is expected to arrive sometime in 2022 and only a Steam version has been confirmed so far, but Bromio promises that they will release a console version as well. I invite you to play the Remnants of the Rift demo and if you like it, you can support Bromio with his Kickstarter.
