The second-hand market is estimated to reach a volume of 77 billion dollars in 2025 globally.
For the next few years, the second-hand online component is expected to expand by 69 percent.
During 2020, 33 million people invested in second-hand clothing for the first time.
Just one month before the most important shopping season in the world begins, as it is for Christmas gifts, many specialized e-commerce pages are already beginning to promote their offers. This is the case of eBay, which promotes the purchase of second-hand items for Christmas gifts.
Consumers are betting on new conscious purchasing options, which is why the “Consumer Trends 2022” report details that during 2020, 33 million people in the world invested for the first time in second-hand clothing.
For its part, in Mexico, the second-hand market has been showing a boom and relevant popularity among Mexican consumers, where platforms such as Mercado Libre, eBay, Linio, among others, have been gaining more ground every day.
Given this, a survey conducted between March and April of last year, detailed that 42 percent of the population of the so-called Generation Z (between 18 and 24 years of age) and Millennials (between 25 and 37 years of age ) claimed to have made purchases of second-hand clothing, footwear and other accessories during 2020.
Promote purchases of second-hand items
Online shopping platform eBay has made a surprise move, going back to its roots and promoting only second-hand or refurbished deals for shopping events like Black Friday.
In this context, Murray Lambell, head of eBay in the United Kingdom, said that the company wants to leave behind the “mentality of buying to buy” on this Black Friday. They consider that focusing on second-hand products helps to face the crisis due to the increase in the cost of living. In addition to being kinder to the planet.
This measure also works as a boost for sellers offering refurbished products.
Various data already record that the promotions of this date in the United States will also be affected by economic problems, where Retail Economics forecasts spending 15 percent less than in previous years.
The head of eBay in England has said the event encourages a buying “frenzy” that culminates in unwanted spending and waste. With this message, they bet on a “reflexive consumption”.
Remember that eBay was originally launched as an online platform for reselling second-hand items. The purpose has evolved to the point that most of their sales are now new products.
As part of its strategy to encourage the purchase of second-hand items, the firm is running a campaign with ITV’s Love Island.
eBay is not the only firm that is promoting this style, as brands such as Heinz have also launched campaigns to offer second-hand purchases.
And this is how brands help drive the new trends that consumers are following and all this with the power of marketing.
