Good. To start this collaboration and get into the matter, let’s put our feet on the ground. It will seem hard (even cruel) to have 100% responsibility for your life, but it is what it should be. Many times we focus on assigning blame for ‘why’ we are not doing well, and the reality is that everything depends on us, on our decisions, thoughts and behaviors.
Although success is an abstract concept, and obtaining it is a relative fact, the methodologies and dynamics work differently for each person. That said, what I will share with you today is a brief guide for you to put your ideas in order and start sowing in fertile ground. The rest will depend on you.
And for no reason do I intend to strictly impose my definition of success. If for you it means achieving exceptional health, completing your doctorate with excellence, amassing a great fortune, starting a family, traveling around the world and/or reaching a peaceful retirement, go ahead and follow your bliss. Let’s get started.
1. First you, then you
No, it is not a premise based on meaningless selfishness, but quite the opposite. If we are well, everything around us will be well. Who is the captain who will navigate your boat and take it to safe harbor? Who will be the architect of your achievements and responsible for your own learning? You! So, physical, mental and spiritual balance are non-negotiable.
2. Definition of objectives
Since we choose to feel good, now let’s get to work. Let’s talk about setting objectives, which are, without a doubt, the (four) extremities of success. Without goals, there are no achievements. Ok, Ana, but how is it done? Easy, taking into account the following characteristics: set few, clear objectives, with an expiration date, that are specific, and very, very important, realistic.
3. Put together your action plan, and execute it!
It is timely to emphasize (and I take advantage of this point to do so) that success is not an accident, much less a coincidence. We cannot hit the target without shooting the arrow; and the chances of repeating three perfect shots, without training, are almost zero. Trace your route to success with the necessary actions, which will little by little bring you closer to your goal(s); develop a daily schedule of activities and divide your tasks for each day; Remember to prioritize what is urgent and important. Daily, weekly and monthly evaluations will be our thermometer and compass.
4. Get out of your comfort zone
And I don’t mean on the couch (well, too), but doing those uncomfortable things that mean effort and stretching; I’ll put it this way, the activities that will push us ‘irremediably’ towards success, such as getting up early, making the call, sending the email, managing the meeting, giving up salt and sugar, doing more push-ups, eliminating cigarettes, seeing no more one chapter a day, and an extensive etcetera.
