PlayStation will not give up the development of narrative single-player games.
“Obviously, we will always continue to create these narrative single player gameslike Ghost of Tsushima, The Last of Us and Horizon Forbidden West ”, assures Hermen Hulst, head of PlayStation Studios, in an interview with GamesIndustry. “But he has correctly noted that we’ve invested in live service games, because that’s incredibly exciting for us. It allows us to build bigger worlds, it allows us to create really meaningful social connections between players.
“We have quite a few now in development or conceptualization, so yes, we are configuring capabilities internally. But for exactly that reason, it’s so exciting for us to welcome into the family a group of people who have a lot of experience with live service games. Having those core capabilities that we’re building interact with people who have been doing it for a long time, that notion that demanding customers build great capabilities, that’s often true in game development.
“It’s really exciting for our core services and technology groups. For them to work with a world-class team like Haven, that’s great. And it is aligned with the strategy of diversify the types of games we offer to our fan base”, concludes the manager.
This same idea of expanding its offer of games as a service is what would also have prompted the purchase of Bungiefor which PlayStation paid $3.6 billion last month.
