In the midst of a strong security device in Mexico City, Ovid Guzmanone of the sons of Joaquín “el Chapo” Guzmán and who was arrested at dawn this Thursday in the city of Culiacán, state of Sinaloa, was transferred this afternoon-night to the prison where he was confined and his father escaped.
In a security strategy and in order not to make the information public, due to the case, the Mexican authorities first sent a convoy of eight vehicles that left around 5:30 p.m. from the Specialized Prosecutor for Organized Crime (Femdo) in the capital Mexico and after 6:00 p.m. from the same place a helicopter departed.
Both teams left from Femdo to the Federal Center for Social Readaptation (Cefereso) number 1 Altiplano -also known as the Almoloya prison-, located in the State of Mexico, where his father was detained and from which he escaped in 2015.
A security device was also deployed on the outskirts of the prison. with at least a dozen vehicles from the Mexican Army and the National Guard.
The arrest of Ovidio Guzmán occurred at dawn and led to various blockades, attacks with bullets, and cars set on fire in the city of Culiacán, capital of the state of Sinaloa, in the northwest of the country.
After his capture, the Armed Forces transferred the son of “Chapo” to the Mexican capital and they made it available to the agent of the federal Public Ministry to determine its legal situation.
Ovidio’s arrest has caused chaos for almost the entire day in Culiacán, where violent acts took place, including some 19 roadblocks with vehicles on fire and armed attacksincluding an attack on the city airport and the number 10 air base.
In addition, all the accesses to Culiacán were closed, four of them from Los Mochis and two more at the exit to Costa Rica, Sinaloa.
School and government activities in Sinaloa were also canceled and the population was asked to remain in their homes to protect their integrity.
The Sinaloan authorities reported that, as the hours have passed, the 19 blockades, with vehicles set on fire, robberies and looting, have been decreasing in intensity.
In addition, they specified that the day so far it has left 28 injured and 1 National Guard agent deadalong with more than 200 stolen cars, about twenty looting of shops.
The new operation to capture the son of “Chapo” was surprising because it occurred four days after the visit of the President of the United States, Joe Biden, for the Summit of North American Leaders, which will also be attended by the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau.
This Thursday, Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard told the media that “there is no relationship between the police operation itself and what happened at the Summit” and denied that there was any kind of “exchange” with the United States Government.
Ebrard also confirmed that there is an extradition request against Ovidio Guzmán, also known as “El Ratón”, which was issued on September 19, 2019, just under a month before his first arrest, on October 17, that year, an operation known as “culiacanazo”.
Ovidio Guzmán López, together with his brother Joaquín Guzmán López, is charged in the United States on charges of criminal association related to illicit drugs.
According to US authorities, the brothers conspired to distribute cocaine, methamphetamine and marijuana in the United States between 2008 and 2018.
