The surname Wayne comes from a great lineage that goes back to the time of the round table of King Arthur, going through historical events such as the War of Independence. Process that defined the course of the family.
Between progress and philanthropy, marked by curses and tragedies, we present a brief summary of the history of the Wayne family, one of the most renowned lineages in the DC Universe
Origin in Europe
The origins of the Wayne family point to the territories now known as Scotland, France, and northern Norway. The first recorded relative is Sir Gawain Wayne, a knight who was part of King Arthur’s round table, his uncle.
Sir Gawain Wayne fought side by side with King Arthur against witches, dragons and other rivals to protect the Holy Grail, while a man known as Bat Man would fight with the Vikings against the Ice Men.
Centuries later it is known that Sir Gaweyne de Weyne, a French knight who was a member of the Scottish court, would fight during the Crusades to protect the city of Jerusalem, which cost him his life.
The move to America
The migration of the Waynes from Europe to the American continent dates back to the 1600s thanks to Nathaniel Wayne, who came to a colony that would eventually become Gotham City to become a witch hunter.
A witch fell in love with a Wayne. But not being reciprocated, this sorceress cursed the Wayne family.
After a century, Thomas Wayne (not Bruce Wayne’s father), a descendant of Nathaniel, participated in human sacrifices on behalf of Barbatos, the great villain whom we met in Dark Knight, Dark City and who was the antagonist of Dark Nights: DeathMetal.
Thomas acquired immunity and managed to live for 200 years, during which time he changed his identity to Dr. Simon Hurt, whom Batman defeated within the pages of Batman: The Return of Bruce Wayne.
The War of Independence and other conflicts
Darius and Anthony Wayne were combatants in the fight for independence from the United States. Darius gained fame after sinking a British ship.
In his honor, Darius began the construction of Wayne Manor, but those who would come to inhabit this house would be his son, Charles Wayne, who also bought a swampy land that became Gotham City.
Charles Wayne died at age 52 and his fortune was inherited by Joshua and Solomon, who used the caves below the mansion to free slaves who fled to Canada. While Joshua was killed by bounty hunters, Solomon became a Judge, finished building Gotham, and had a son named Alan.
Alan contributed to the development of the railway system in Gotham and would go on to be the founder of Wayne Enterprises. And he had a son named Kennethm before he was killed by the Court of Owls.
Kenneth was in charge of opening Wayne Chemicals, but he died still very young. He was survived by his widow Laura Elizabeth Wayne and his son Patrick (Bruce’s grandfather), who expanded Wayne Industries with WayneTech, WayneCorp and more. Patrick had two children, Agatha and Thomas.
The 20th century and the tragedy that overwhelmed the Waynes
Thomas Wayne broke with family tradition and preferred to study medicine, with the purpose of helping those who needed it most. After graduating from medical school, Wayne traveled to the poorer countries of the Caribbean to help his population, until his return to Gotham as a prominent surgeon.
Thomas Wayne fell in love with Martha Kane, whom he married and they both fathered a son named Bruce. It should be noted that Thomas Wayne used a bat costume to fight a gang of criminals. Don’t miss these details in The Ultold Legend of Batman.
However, the greatest tragedy of the Wayne family occurred when Thomas and Martha were killed by Joe Chill.
Little Bruce witnessed this crime and was left in the care of Alfred Pennywoth, a former British agent and aspiring actor who was hired by the family as his butler.
Bruce Wayne’s children
Although Bruce Wayne had no natural children until 2006, the philanthropist took care of young people like Dick Grayson and Jason Todd. Whom he adopted, in addition to protecting Tim Drake and Cassandra Cain, three bearers of the Robin mantle and one of Batgirl.
Bruce’s biological paternity came years later. Talia became pregnant with Bruce and gave birth to a little boy named Damian. Ra’s Al Ghul trained his grandson, but Damian decides to join his father in fighting crime in Gotham.
While in other lands Bruce Wayne also has a daughter with Selina Kyle. Helena Wayne, who assumes the alias of Huntress.
How will the Wayne bloodline continue in the future? Only time will tell.
