The Astra sixth generation is supported by the EMP2 platform by Stellantis. That is why, with this generational change, the Opel model loses any link that still remained with its past under the umbrella of General Motors. The use of this architecture, which is also used by the new Peugeot 308, is key to materializing the electrification plans that the brand has for this model.
The mechanical offering for the new Astra will consist of a selection of gasoline and diesel engines. In the mechanical section there will also be great news. For the first time in its history the Astra will be available as a plug-in hybrid. Opel will offer two plug-in hybrid powertrains. An all-in-one solution that continues to gain popularity.
The Astra plug-in hybrid will be available in two power levels: 180 hp and 225 hp. In both cases with front-wheel drive and with an eight-speed automatic gearbox. The 12.4 kWh lithium-ion battery will allow you to travel up to 60 kilometers in 100% electric mode.

Beyond the aforementioned plug-in hybrid engines, Opel will go one step further and bet on electrification at its highest level. The 100% electric variant of the Astra will be a reality. The signature of the ray has confirmed the development and arrival of the Opel Astra-e. The German manufacturer will add a new electric car to its range to cope with models such as the Volkswagen ID.3 or the Nissan Leaf.
When will the electric Astra hit the market? Marketing of the new Astra will begin next fall. The first deliveries are scheduled for the first quarter of 2022. In its first commercial stage it will be available exclusively in a five-door hatchback format. Later, the family body variant, the Astra Sports Tourer, will be incorporated. It will be a year later when the new Astra-e joins the range.
The new 100% electric Astra-e will be a reality in 2023. Production will take place at Opel’s facilities in Rüsselsheim (Germany).
