Microsoft has released a new update for OneDrive for Android. It debuts a new home screen, Samsung Motion Photos support, and the ability to play 8K videos. The new home screen includes quick access to recent files, offline files, and OneDrive’s “On This Day” feature that reminds us of old photos we’ve taken.
OneDrive now works better with Samsung smartphones
Support for Samsung Motion Photos is also included in this update. This allows Samsung phone owners to play photos captured with motion in the OneDrive app or from a browser. These photos work like Apple Live Photos and capture a still image along with several seconds of video and sound before capture. Microsoft says that playback of Samsung Motion Photos is rolling out worldwide and will require Android version 6 or higher.
The latest addition is 8K video playback for compatible Samsung phones like last year’s new Galaxy S21 or S20. While you’ve always been able to store 8K videos on OneDrive, the service now supports playback on compatible displays and devices. This could help us to store 8K video in Microsoft’s cloud storage service, especially when OneDrive now supports up to 250GB per file.
This latest Android update for OneDrive is heavily focused on Samsung phones and is an example of the partnership between Microsoft and Samsung. Both companies are working on a variety of ways to integrate Microsoft’s software and services into Samsung Android phones.
