Chihuahua offers majestic landscapes to everyone who travels through itfrom infinities deserts to magical ravines. However, it is thought that said state was part of the Tethys Seacurrently the Indian Ocean.
There is a theory, that of Edward Suessin which it is said that much of the land of Mexico was found submerged in water.
The Sea of Tethys
This was due to the fact that the northern coast of the Tethys Seain the Mesozoic eraflooded Chihuahua, part of Coahuila, Baja California Sur, Monterrey, and Sonora.
In the case of Chihuahuathe land that was not covered by the sea was a thin strip of land to the east, as well as the northeast section of Durango.
However, 70 million years ago, derived from terrestrial movements, the land we know as the Mexican republic. This event turned the north coast of the Tethys Sea in large desert areas.
The vestiges of the sea in Chihuahua
Over time, researchers discovered possible traces that could confirm this theory.
On the one hand, it is due to the minerals that make up the soil of the desert areas of Chihuahuamuch of it has salt and coal deposits at a superficial level. Elements that suggest that it was a warm and tropical sea.
On the other hand, a great diversity of animal fossils, mammoth and dinosaur bones, turtle shells, among other species, have been collected.
Although, to attest to the time that Chihuahua was submerged in water, there are easily identifiable fossils: the ammonites. It is a species of marine animals that protected themselves with an aragonite shell, which has a spiral shape.
Ammonite fossils are located in rocks from the Jurassic period and it is said that these animals abounded in the seas. They are related to the current cephalopods; that is to say with octopus, squid, cuttlefish, among others.
It is important to point out that these remains are easily found in the regions of Ojiganfa, Coyame del Sotol, Manuel Benavidesin Chihuahua.
So if you dare to visit the magnificent landscapes of this state, take a good look around you in case you come across any element that tells you the history of the Earth.
