Nintendo takes over a long-standing partner who has collaborated on multiple projects.
This beginning of the year has been a real madness in terms of major acquisitions within the video game industryfirst Take-Two bought Zynga for around 12 billion dollars, shortly after Microsoft signed the most expensive purchase in history by paying 70 billion dollars for Activision Blizzard and, more recently, Sony bought Bungie for 3.6 billion dollars, although it paid too much according to several analysts. It seems unbelievable, but now it is Nintendo that has bought a development studioAlthough I’m sure it cost a lot less.
Specifically, it is about SRD Co.Ltda Japanese development studio based in Tokyo with which Nintendo has had a close relationship for years for the support you have given to company games such as Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Zelda: Breath of the Wild for Nintendo Switch, and Mario Kart Tour for mobile devices. At release published by nintendo it is not specified due to money the operation has been closed, but dates its annexation to Nintendo for April 1.
SRD Co. Ltd. works closely with Nintendo since the NES days in Donkey Kong and Super Mario Bros, and has participated in other more transgressive proposals such as Game Builder Garage and Nintendo Labo, that commitment of the Japanese to unite video games with traditional toys made with cardboard templates. In this way it becomes Nintendo’s second studio purchase in just over a year.
In January 2021 Nintendo announced the purchase of Next Level Games, creators of the acclaimed Luigi’s Mansion 3, and responsible for the new Mario Strikers that will arrive on Nintendo Switch next June. Normally, Nintendo is not very given to making these types of acquisitions, has the current trend of purchases within the industry influenced you in any way?
