Thanks to the official merchandise of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness we have a more detailed look at Gargantos, the creature that will chase America Chavez in the Marvel Studios film
The Multiverse will face one of the biggest conflicts ever seen in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, a film in which one of the villains has begun to have a presence in phase four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Gargantos.

Thanks to a poster sold in the United States by a chain of self-service stores, Marvel Studios revealed through its official merchandise the appearance of Gargantos, the villain who would be in the footsteps of America Chavez, and who would have already faced Doctor Strange in the first season of What If…?
In the Gargantos comics he debuted in the pages of Sub-Mariner #13 (May, 1969) and was created by Roy Thomas. Gargantos is a giant octopus that is under the control of Naga, who is an enemy of Namor, the Submariner.
Although this villain’s appearance resembles Shuma-Gorath, the creature that debuted in the pages of Marvel Premier #5 (November 1972), created by Steve Englehart and Frank Brunner.
Why is it Gargantos and not Shuma-Gorath?
Despite Shuma-Gorath being one of the scariest villains in the Marvel Universe, the villain in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is named Gargantos, one of the creatures from the Namor the Sub-Mariner mythology.
This change is derived from the rights to the name, which are in the hands of Universal Pictures, a studio that also owns the film rights of the Hulk, although this time the rights to the character were not owned by Marvel.
Steve Englehart and Frank Brunner, the creators of Shuma-Gorath, were inspired by the work of Robert E. Howard, The Curse of the Golden Skullin addition to the fact that its appearance resembles the monsters written by HP Lovecraft.
In 1997 Universal Pictures released the film Kull the Conqueror, which adapted The Curse of the Golden Skull, and Shuma-Gorath was featured in this story.
Universal made that Kull movie in ’97, so they may still be tied up with live-action rights somehow?
Either way, Marvel may actually not have the right to call that gnarly looking beast Shuma-Gorath, hence the use of Gargantos—a character created strictly for Marvel Comics.

As comicbook contributor Adam Barnhardt explains, Universal named the Kull villain The Conquer Shuma-Gorath, which ties the name to Kull’s rights, so to avoid legal trouble, Marvel Studios renamed the creature Gargantos.
After the events of Avengers: Endgame, Dr. Stephen Strange continues his investigation of the Time Stone. But an old friend turned enemy puts a stop to his plans and causes Strange to unleash unspeakable evil.
Directed by Sam Raimi, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will star Benedict Cumberbatch, Elizabeth Olsen, Benedict Wong, Xochitl Gómez, and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will hit theaters on May 5, 2022.
