The company explained that the note was sent on Thursday to its millions of employees.
This message comes after ongoing protests from the streaming company’s staff over Chappelle’s criticism.
During his hour-long laugh fest, Chappelle launched into a series of jokes about trans women’s genitalia.
After internal dissension caused by productions such as comedian Dave Chappelle’s controversial stand-up special, Netflix would have issued a memorandum to its disgruntled employees, where it invites them to resign their positions if they feel offended by said program.
According to data from Statista, video services have taken over the entertainment market in Latin America, so it is estimated that in 2020, for the first time in history, the number of video service subscribers via streaming would have surpassed pay TV subscribers.
Likewise, the statistics platform details that since its arrival in Latin America in 2011, Netflix has been one of the most used streaming video platforms by Latino viewers.
Netflix leaves memo to its “disgruntled” employees
The text shared by the company to its employees underlines that the streaming giant values the “artistic expression” of its content creators above the personal thoughts and beliefs of each employee and lifestyles.
“And any worker who doesn’t like it can Flix off,” the statement says.
Also in the memo you can read: “as employees, we support the principle that Netflix offers a diversity of stories, even if we find some titles contrary to our own personal values, reads the memo, entitled Netflix Culture: in search of the excellence”.
“Depending on your role, you may need to work on titles that you perceive to be harmful. If you find it difficult to support our breadth of content, Netflix may not be the best place for you,” the statement continued.
The company explained that the note was sent on Thursday to its millions of employees.
“Entertaining the world is an incredible opportunity and also a challenge because viewers have very different tastes and points of view. So we offer a wide variety of TV shows and movies, some of which can be provocative,” the lengthy statement states.
“Depending on your role, you may need to work on titles that you perceive to be harmful. To help members make informed decisions about what to watch. We offer easy-to-use ratings, content warnings, and parental controls,” she points out.
Continued staff protests over criticism of Chappelle
This message comes after ongoing protests from the streaming company’s staff over Chappelle’s criticism of transgender people in the Netflix special “The Closer,” which premiered on the digital platform in October.
Recall that during his hour-long laugh fest, Chappelle launched into a series of jokes about trans women’s genitalia, insisted that “gender is a given” and called the LGBTQ+ community “too sensitive.”
Shortly after the show’s premiere, angry Netflix staff members staged a walkout in an effort to demonstrate their collective disapproval of the comedian’s digs.
But the riot failed to convince Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos, who maintained his support for Chappelle and continued to air the special.
The streaming giant acknowledged that its content may be problematic for some viewers, it remains adamant that it will not silence the voices of its artists. “Not everyone will like, or agree with, everything on our service,” the broadcaster said.
“While each title is different, we approach them based on the same set of principles: We support the artistic expression of the creators we choose to work with; we program for a diversity of audiences and tastes; and we let viewers decide what is appropriate for them, rather than Netflix censoring specific artists or voices,” she emphasized.
Elsewhere, the text reminded workers that the company does not intend to treat workers as “family” members, but rather as lionhearted athletes on an award-winning athletic “dream team,” one in the that any player can easily be benched or sent off.
“We model ourselves as a professional sports team, not as a family. A family is about unconditional love. A dream team is about pushing yourself to be the best teammate possible, caring intensely about your team, and knowing that you may not be on the team forever,” Netflix wrote.
