The Government of Mexico will carry out the second “National Seismic Simulation” on September 19 with the implementation, for the first time, of four hypothetical scenarios that can occur in the national territory.
This exercise, which will take place at 11:00 a.m. local time, will keep millions of Mexicans in suspense for what happened in 2022, when that same day a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck central Mexicowith the record of one death, just on the anniversary of the tremors of 1985 and 2017, the most destructive in recent history.
The four scenarios that the drill will contemplate in Mexico are: an earthquake in the town of Acapulco, Guerrero, in the south of the country, with a magnitude of 8.0, or a second earthquake of magnitude 7.8 in the state of Sonora and Chihuahua, in the northwest of the country.

In addition to earthquakes, there will also be two tropical cyclone scenarios: a category 3 hurricane in different states such as Quintana Roo, Tabasco or Veracruz, in the southern part of the country, and a second category 4 hurricane in the state of Baja California. in the northwest of the country.
It is the first time that an approach to hypothetical scenarios that cover the entire national territory with earthquakes and hurricanes has been carried out”, explained Oscar Zepeda Ramos, general director of Civil Protection.
Through the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection and the National Civil Protection Coordination of Mexico, on the anniversaries of the earthquakes of September 19, 1985 and 2017, considered the most devastating in recent history, the drills seek strengthens prevention in Mexico.
The objectives are to strengthen the prevention, preparation and response capacities of the members of the Integral System for Measurement and Advancement of Productivity (SIMAPRO), (…) as well as the evacuation routes and emergency exits of buildings and homes and points meeting, remarked Laura Velázquez Alzúa, national coordinator of Civil Protection.
Velázquez clarified that this drill serves to determine any failure to inform the Government of the errors that may exist and review the vulnerable conditions that each municipality has.
