A key moment in the history of humanity: NASA announced to the four astronauts who will travel to the orbit of the Moon in Artemis II, including the first woman, Christina Koch. Commander Gregory Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover and Jeremy Hansen (Canadian) round out the crew.
Following the Orion spacecraft’s journey to lunar orbit in November 2022, these four astronauts are expected to make the same journey in 2024. It will last about 10 days.
It is presumed that Artemis III, in 2025, will take this crew to the surface of the Moon, with two of them taking walks and two present in the module.
Koch, Wiseman, Glover, and Hansen. They will be the first astronauts to reach the vicinity of our natural satellite since Gene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt stepped onto the surface in 1972, as part of the Apollo 17 mission.
The first men to reach the Moon were the legendary Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, in 1969, spearheading the Apollo 11 Mission. Michael Collins remained in the lunar module.
The crew presentation was given by Bill Nelson, NASA Administrator. Puerto Rican astronaut Joe Acabá served as master of ceremonies.
The Artemis Program seeks a permanent presence on the Moon, including the journey of the first woman and the following men to our natural satellite. Looking ahead, NASA and its partner agencies hope to build the Gateway Laboratory in orbit.
The goal is to promote deep space exploration.
