The first thing to note about the series is that it feels like one of Marvel, but at the same time no. This is thanks to the touches of humor and some specific scenes that surprise. For example, since our protagonist is a muslim teen, the desi-music is fundamental in his life and it would never have occurred to us that in a series of Marvel this musical style could attract so much attention and even be part of the soundtrack with such good results.
During a press conference in which we were able to participate, the director of the episode 4 and 5, Sharmeen Obaid Chinoycommented that his conversations with the creator of the series, Sana Amanat, they were mainly focused on exchanging various songs that could be part of the soundtrack of the series. “I think the music we see in Pakistan is very lively, and flooded with WhatsApp of Fury with how 10 tracks. And I told him listen to this, this and this. And I think a lot of that can be seen on the show, and it’s what makes you smile.”
With the acting debut of its leading man, Iman Vellani, Ms. Marvel tells us the story of Kamala Khan. This Muslim teenager living in New Jersey and grew up in a world where superheroes like Iron Man, Captain America or his idol, Captain Marvel save the day. khan is an intense fanatic, and even has her own YouTube channel, Sloth, to demonstrate her fanaticism for Superheros.
But like any teenager, khan must face the great problems of age, added to a life surrounded by customs and religion. Her parents are very strict, no one pays attention to her at school and at least she has a good time with her friends, as long as she doesn’t break her parents’ rules. Although her very normal adolescence comes to an end for her when she receives some mysterious ancient bracelets from her grandmother. Putting on these bracelets, she discovers that they are not just accessories but that they give her powers, something that differs from the comics (Comic Fans, hold back!).
One of the main differences between the comics and the series is the powers of Kamala What is the character’s origin story like? In the comics, Ms Marvel is a kind of mr fantastic Y Ant Man, that is, it can be stretched and reduced or increased in size. These powers are achieved thanks to an event triggered by the inhumans, who in the MCU they do not exist. Or at least they don’t in-universe 616.
However, in the series the powers of Kamala they are granted by these mysterious bracelets that function as if they were the Green Lantern ring, and that he receives as a kind of inheritance. The change of these important characteristics of the character have an explanation, which according to Kevin Feige, President of Marvel, had to do with the decision to make the character coherent within the MCU.
But we don’t have to worry too much, since the main writer of the series, Bisha K Alispoke at the press conference about the process of developing the character for the series and the changes that had to be made to make it into the MCU. “Everyone involved in this project loves comics from the bottom of their hearts. And I think we’re committed to that love… I didn’t wake up one day and say, Hey KevinI know, let’s get the powers out. That was not my first idea by any means. It was a group decision to have to choose how to make Kamala will fit in MCU“.
The writer also confirmed that they tried to do their best not to take away the most important thing from the character: his essence. And that can be clearly seen in each of the scenes where we see Kamala Khan, a Muslim teenager who is a fan of superheroes who now becomes one of them.
Another of the great strengths of the series is the way in which they represent the family. khan. The family of our beloved heroine is formed his mother, Muneeba (Zenobia Shroff), his father Yusuf (Mohan Kapur), and his older brother Aamir (Saagar Shaikh). The chemistry between the actors is so great that the family seems to be real. One of the main intentions of the series was this, to present a family with which anyone could feel represented and say “They wouldn’t let me do that either for the same reason.”
But one of its central themes and what makes Ms Marvel so special is religion. kamala khan She is the first Muslim female superhero Marvel and of MCU, and in the series there are many nods to customs and their religion. However, from Disney they clarified that the intention of Marvel when choosing Kamala as the next leading heroine of her own series was not for the “representation”.
One of the words we hear most in recent years is the representation of certain communities in series and movies. In the two chapters that we were able to enjoy, religion plays an important role in the life of Kamala and probably this will continue in the rest of the series. And although not all of us are part of Islam, religion is treated in an understandable way that allows us to enjoy a bit of a different lifestyle.
There are very few times that a series or a movie shows the daily life of religion without taking it as the central axis of the story. Nevertheless, Ms Marvel shows us various elements of religion in a respectful way and that allows us to understand a little how the community of the Islamism Yes, the series undoubtedly promotes inclusion, but it is not the axis of what it wants to tell.
In terms of production, we are clearly not facing a series like WandaVision, but still manages to attract attention. With a characteristic style and similar to that of the comic, Ms Marvel It gives us scenes with some animated touches (similar to what Spider-Man sometimes showed) that add just enough to make it interesting. And these animations usually happen mainly when Kamala imagine things. “We always wanted to find a way to convey his imagination and luxurious world in a cool way.”commented the executive producer of the series, Adil El Arbi. “And that’s when it occurred to us to include the animation aspect.” The interesting thing is that the animation is not abused, but the resource appears at the right time.
And finally, if we compare Ms Marvel with the previous series that reached Disney Plus, Moon Knightthe story of kamala khan has many more references to MCU. And when we say many, they are many. as we do not want spoil the first few episodes a lot, we’re just going to say that a certain event from the first chapter is full of references to the superheroes of the MCU.
Of Ms Marvel you can expect many things. But chances are, if you’re in your pre-teens or full teens, the series will surprise you and you’ll find out that your new favorite superheroine is a teenager not so different from you. And perhaps for the older ones it can be a nostalgia trip or to see ourselves reflected in parents who do not know how to act with a teenager in the house.
The first episode of Ms Marvel is now available on the platform Disney Plus. The series has six episodes and get us ready for the movie the marvelssequel to Captain Marvel, that he arrives July 27, 2023.
