Learn more about the history of Khonshu, the Egyptian god responsible for endowing Marc Spector with the powers that make him a Moon Knight
If you’re a fan of Marc Spector, you’re probably clamoring for more ‘Fist of Vengeance’ stories. And we don’t blame you one bit. Of course, everyone’s favorite lunar-themed hero wouldn’t be who he is without a little help from Khonshu. But who is Khonshu, this mighty god of the moon, and what role does he play in the story of Moon Knight?
Do not miss: Who is Khonshu, the mysterious Egyptian god who gave Moon Knight his powers
Khonshu has had many faces over the years, in a couple of ways. As an Old God, he has been a major player in several of the most significant periods of Earth’s history. Also, he’s literally had different faces, as he’s taken different forms over the years, and his Moon Knights, who are essentially avatars of him on Earth, have often reflected the historical context of the day. .
different physical forms
As a god, Khonshu can take on different physical forms. He often appears as a figure dressed in white, with a large bird’s skull for a head (it’s as scary as it sounds).
But in Ancient Egypt, he posed as a human pharaoh in the city of Thebes, as seen in Thor & Hercules: Encyclopaedia Mythologica #1. During the same period, the god Osiris also masqueraded as a human and ruled the city of Heliopolis. When Osiris was overthrown by the god Seth, he created turmoil for the gods and gave rise to new roles for some of them. Osiris became the new God of the Dead and Khonshu became the God of the Moon.
Also, after apparently killing the mercenary Raoul Bushman in Moon Knight (2006) #2, Marc Spector believed that Khonshu repeatedly visited him in the form of Bushman, something that understandably caused him a lot of emotional distress.
In the history
In Moon Knight #188, Khonshu was described as the “greatest god of great gods”. That’s a pretty lofty claim! But he gets better. In King in Black: Black Knight #1, it was suggested that he is an ancient Elder God whose existence predates Earth and made his way into human mythologies after settling on the planet at least a million years ago.
Khonshu is one of the gods of Celestial Heliopolis and was part of the Ancient Egyptian pantheon (it is based on a real-world deity of the same name, sometimes referred to by variations of the name, such as Khonsu and Khons, among others ).
While in Thebes, he had a run-in with Kang the Conqueror, when Kang showed up trying to master time (as one does). In fact, due to some time travel shenanigans, Khonshu has rubbed elbows with Kang and Marc Spector at various times throughout the story.
But his history with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes goes back even further. Offended after not being offered membership in the Stone Age Avengers, he chose the first known Moon Knight to act as his avatar, enforce his will on Earth, and serve as the heroes’ antagonist. This was necessary due to the fact that the ancient gods could only partially manifest themselves in an earthly form. The creation of the first Moon Knight led to the formation of the Cult of Khonshu and the long line of successor Moon Knights that would follow.
Khonshu was also involved in the history of the Roman Empire, the Vikings, and the American Revolution. His Moon Knights during those times included a Gladiator, a Viking, and a Patriot, respectively.
Recent Interventions in History
In the more recent past, he took part in World War II to help a group of British soldiers in Moon Knight (1980) #22. And he fought a Sun King who was working with the Nazis in Moon Knight Annual (2019) #1.
But of course Khonshu is not always so benevolent. He is a complex character who sometimes heals people and fights Nazis, but other times he is much more destructive. With that, he also has many faces when it comes to his moral and ethical alignment. At the end of the day, what worries her most is his own power. And this has implications for anyone acting as a Moon Knight, as they are expected to carry out Khonshu’s wishes whether they like it or not. Moon Knights are given significant power, but it definitely comes with some strings attached.
Across various periods in time, Khonshu has crossed paths with the West Coast Avengers, Hank Pym, the Fantastic Four, and many other favorites. This is a god who knows how to move. But how did his relationship with Marc Spector begin?
Connecting with Marc Spector
Archaeologists Peter Alraune, Sr. and his daughter Marlene discovered a statue of Khonshu inside the tomb of Pharaoh Seti. But a mercenary named Raoul Bushman raided the dig and killed Peter. Then Marc Spector, who had been Raoul’s ally, turned against him. There was all kinds of drama and Raoul left Marc in the desert to die. Marlene and the others involved in the excavation believed that he was actually dead and placed his body in front of the grave.
Marc then rose from the dead, claiming that he had been resurrected by Khonshu and given a mission to serve the cause of vengeance as a Moon Knight.. This gave him better reflexes, durability, and strength, all related to the cycle. lunar (although he recently increased his powers for a while – read more about that and all things Marc Spector here).
Marc returned to New York and eventually became a hero. But his complicated relationship with Khonshu, who often had his own priorities, made things difficult for him.
