It is the nightmare of any news checker and one of the greatest dangers we have as a society. Where everything can be manipulated, tools are needed that can combat them.
The fight against deepfakes is more necessary than ever, as technology has reached a level where it is very difficult to differentiate reality from fiction.
While at the beginning it was something exclusive to the pornographic realm, the techniques have been transferred to the world of celebrities and politicians. Imagine how dangerous it would be to see a very credible video of Joe Biden saying that World War III is going to start.
For this reason, Microsoft, one of the technology giants that has been most concerned so far about this issue, is investing several million dollars in a company that is dedicated to fighting them.
This company it’s called Truepic, and So far it has developed very reliable fake and mount detection technologies.
Through your inspection platform Digital Vision, promises to quickly verify the images sent to it. It currently claims to have already verified millions of photos and videos captured in more than 150 countries around the world using its controlled capture technology.
This platform gathers several highly secure data fields for each file, which are then analyzed looking for any trace of tampering, before being protected with cryptographic hashing.
Next, the system seals all the data, along with the supporting metadata, to maintain what is called a chain of custody, which passes files through a verification pipeline that checks the file for stress to ensure its safety before, during and after capture.
Microsoft with this investment wants to be part of Truepic and, from now on, will be part of the board of directors. It is possible that in not long we will see these services within Microsoft’s software offerings, both for companies and individuals.
