PROSPERiA, a Mexican firm with the mission of democratizing access to quality health services through technology, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), obtained financing of 2 million dollars from “Cardo Health”, a Swedish investment fund, dedicated to support technology initiatives in the health sector.
According to Cristina Campero, general director of the firm, part of this capital will allow the development of new technological solutions to improve the user experience, become known in more regions of Mexico and provide comprehensive care to patients through technology.
The company was born three years ago with the mission of democratizing access to quality health services through technology, particularly artificial intelligence. Initially, it focused on the timely diagnosis of chronic diseases and the prevention of blindness through the use of risk calculators and visual health assessment. Through these two tools, PROSPERiA has helped prevent blindness in more than 15,000 Mexicans since its commercial launch in January 2021.
Said risk calculator is 100% online and determines the probability that a person will develop diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases or some ophthalmological condition.
The visual health assessment is done using a fundus camera that allows taking a photo of the retina without any discomfort. Digital images are studied on the platform, with PROSPERiA’s AI algorithms, which recognize damage from the main causes of blindness.
PROSPERiA will seek to reach more patients
In this context, with the resources provided by “Cardo Health”, during 2023, the company will seek to increase its impact by increasing the number of visual health evaluations to more than 10,000 patients per month.
In addition, also using financing from the Swedish fund, the healthtech developed a telemedicine and artificial intelligence platform focused on primary health, particularly mental health and women’s care, with doctors and psychologists online, where the user can access immediate or scheduled consultations. , at a low cost. Each patient will have their clinical history within the platform, which will allow PROSPERiA doctors to offer better personalized care. The launch of this platform is expected in early 2023.
“Our mission is to ensure that anyone, anywhere, can detect their diseases in time and thus prevent the consequences. For this reason, at PROSPERiA we put technology and artificial intelligence at the service of patients, so that it is not the lack of resources that leads or keeps people in hospitals or standing in endless lines to receive medical attention”, says Campero.
According to the National Council for the Evaluation of Social Development Policy (Coneval), during 2020, the first year of the pandemic in Mexico, 28% of the population (35.7 million people) lacked public health services.
The pandemic as a catalyst
In this sense, PROSPERiA was born to help meet this demand and with the aim of democratizing health services and bringing them to all Mexicans. In this way, the managers decided to create an online and face-to-face platform that incorporates artificial intelligence and that, during its first year of pilot tests, offered free medical diagnoses.
“Since the pandemic, people have been looking for new ways to access health services remotely, this is how telemedicine, which was already an option, accelerated its development and became a fast, safe and reliable tool. For this reason, society must continue betting and investing in cutting-edge technology and training in medical issues, ”explained Campero.
