In 2021, only 2.3 percent of all the vehicles that Mercedes Benz sold in the world were 100% electric.
This is why the German brand is seeking to grow where other companies are consolidating with much more aggressive new product launch strategies.
In this scenario, we must analyze the novelty of this Tuesday, April 19: Mercedes Benz introduced its new sports utility vehicle (SUV) called EQS.
It is a car with a range of more than 650 kilometers that will be produced in the US and will go on sale in the second half of 2022.
The EQS is the luxury car brand’s second electric SUV and will join the EQC, which is already produced at the Mercedes factory in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, United States.
According to the analysis of the brand and specialists in the sector, the United States and Canada will be the main markets for the new launch of Mercedes Benz, says Reuters.
Similarly, the idea is to create a marketing strategy for a later launch in Europe in the last quarter of this year.
The German company did not disclose the sales value of the new EQS SUV, however, a good parameter is the price of the EQS electric sedan that it already sells at around 102 thousand dollars in the US
The increasingly accelerated launch of SUVs in the United States has an explanation: three out of four new cars sold in that market in 2021 were trucks and sport utility vehicles, so manufacturers are forced to target that segment.
At the same time, they must develop electric vehicles to reduce their carbon footprint.
Quite a challenge, since larger cars need more power and range.
In order to maintain a production chain in line with the requirements of the new products, the German brand opened its first battery factory for e-cars in the US last March, also in Alabama.
In the first quarter of 2022, Mercedes-Benz sold 21,900 100% electric vehicles worldwide, this is three times more than in the same period of 2021.
It’s a big number because overall sales fell 14 percent in the same period.
As we explained before, only 2.3 percent of Mercedes Benz’s new car sales in 2021 were 100% electric. And 11 percent if hybrids are also included, that is, with a combined gasoline and plug-in engine.
