Based on Kim Hoon’s novel Namhansanseong, The Fortress is set during the Second Manchu invasion of Korea in 1636. Here, King Injo and his servants seek refuge in the mountainous city of Namhansanseong, but in their isolation, the king’s servants discuss their arguments to negotiate with the Qing dynasty or continue fighting for the cause.
The production was a huge success and remains the only period drama among Hwang Dong-hyuk’s films. It also represented the first nomination as Best Director at the Grand Bell Awards, which are the South Korean equivalent of the Oscars.
