The presentation of the recent new Mazda CX-60 has revealed the intention of the Hiroshima brand to get closer to the Premium, and distance itself from the generalists. The firm has a long way to go, but it has already laid the foundation stones with a new generation of engines, realizing its technology.
Mazda has always been one of the Japanese manufacturers that has stood out above the competition from the land of the rising sun. The Hiroshima-based firm has been considered a Premium, but the reality is that it is very far from the Germans that dominate the market in this category. For a few months, those responsible for the Japanese they aspire to stand out and stand out moreso the new CX-60 is the first model of this new strategy.
But there is more. The brand presented new petrol and diesel engines that will be mounted on future models that will arrive in the coming years, and of which we hardly knew data until the revelation of the new SUV equipped with plug-in hybrid technology. In the pipeline for the European market, Mazda plans the launch of the CX-80, a seven-seater SUV that we will see in 2023, powered by the same electrified technology, but also with powerful high-end blocks of their own.
Mazda develops new powertrain and transmission systems
Two blocks in architecture 3.3-liter in-line six-cylinder in the case of the “e-SkyActiv-D” dieseland of 3.0 liters in the gasoline «e-SkyActiv-X». In common, the two have their own solution with a 48 Volt system, a technology that the Japanese call «M Hybrid Boost» with which they reduce fuel consumption and, at the same time, also allow a little extra power to be available for certain circumstances. For example, in the acceleration phase and only for a few seconds.
The manufacturer has ensured that the performance in consumption and emissions of the two six-cylinder blocks are at the level of a four cylinder. Although the gasoline is completely new, the diesel is actually an evolution of the 2.2-liter four-cylinder block, but has undergone a major revision. So much so that even the combustion chambers are completely new and innovative, with an ovoid shape to better distribute the air-fuel mixture.
The two engines, which will also be offered in the new generation of the Mazda6 that will be a novelty in 2023 and of which for now there is no spy photo, they will be associated with a new 8-speed automatic gearbox. This transmission is also new, because the Japanese have pulled ingenuity, not only by betting on a multi-disc clutch system, instead of a torque converter, but because they have managed to the transmission is tighterwhich will be perceived inside with a less bulky central tunnel.
