Cinépolisthrough its alternative content window Más que Cine (+QUE CINE), will bring inu-oh to theaters in Mexico. Masaaki Yuasa’s most recent film offers us a unique adaptation of a tale from the Tales of Heike, by Hideo Furukawa, who in turn took up the classic of Japanese literature The Song of Heike, an epic poem from the 13th century. A musical odyssey that combines the folklore and rhythms of Japan at that time with hip hop, rock and the spirit of contemporary music festivals.
inu-oh will project the days January 6 and 7, 2023 in a version subtitled into Latin Spanish in 40 Cinépolis sets in the Mexican Republic. The pre-sale will begin this Friday, December 30 at the box office, the mobile application and the website of the Mexican exhibitor.
Masaaki Yuasa is the creative mind behind cult films like Mind Game (2004), Night Is Short, Walk on Girl (2017), Lu Over the Wall (2017) and Ride Your Wave: Together at Sea (2019). Likewise, he has directed acclaimed series such as Tatami Galaxy, Ping Pong the Animation, Devilman Crybaby, Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! Y Japan sinks: 2020.

The Science SARU feature film marked the debut in an animated production of Akiko Nogi, screenwriter of the films live action from I am a hero and the saga Library Wars; as well as Yoshihide Otomo, composer of the live action from Orange Y Boku wa Imōto ni Koi or Suru. The mangaka Taiyo Matsumoto (Table tennis) handled the character designs. Avu-chan, from the rock band Queen Bee, provided the voice of Inu-Oh, while actor Mirai Moriyama (20th Century Boys) played Tomona.
Cinépolis offers the following synopsis of inu-oh:
“Inu-oh, a young man born into a prestigious family, has been forced by society to live marginalized due to his deformed appearance due to an ancient curse. But his destiny will change when he meets Tomona, a blind monk experienced in playing the biwa and whose music will make him discover a hidden talent: dance. Thus, Inu-oh and Tomona will form a great friendship that will lead them to delight audiences with brilliant musical performances. In the end, their creative gifts will be the engine that will make them discover a hidden truth.
inu-oh had its world premiere as part of the Horizons section at the 78th Venice International Film Festival. The 98-minute film was also screened at the Toronto and Tokyo Festivals in 2021, before its commercial release on May 28, 2022 in theaters in Japan. It is also nominated for Best Animated Film at the 80th Golden Globe Awards.
