Amazon Prime Video’s content marketing strategy to compete with Netflix, Disney Plus, Star Plus, and Apple TV, among other streaming services, points in one direction: the world’s most controversial sports stars.
To the bioseries about Diego Armando Maradona, “Blessed Dream”, which will premiere on October 29, 2021, is now adding a documentary about the life of the English soccer idol Wayne Rooney.
“Rooney,” as the new Amazon Prime Video content will be called, will premiere in early 2022, the company said along with the teaser trailer.
The documentary, part of Amazon’s renewed content marketing strategy, seeks to show the life of the elite athlete, with interviews with his inner circle and showing the challenges he faced on the way to glory.
The Rooney documentary is directed by BAFTA winner Matt Smith and includes interviews with sports celebrities such as David Beckham, Thierry Henry, Gary Neville and Sven-Göran Eriksson, as well as his wife Colleen and other friends and family.
Along with “Rooney”, Amazon presented another sports documentary, in this case, about the life of the British boxing champion Nicola Adams.
“Lioness: The Nicola Adams Story” will premiere on November 12.
Adams, an undefeated WBO champion and double Olympic gold medalist, fought her entire career against sexism, racism and homophobia.
These two novelties came a day after it was known that the series about Diego Maradona will premiere on October 29, a day before the anniversary of the birth of the player who died last year.
The premiere will be global, in more than 200 countries and territories, and it is Amazon Prime’s big bet for the final stretch of 2021. “Maradona: Blessed Dream” consists of 10 episodes.
Release strategy: the first five are released at the same time (on the 29th of this month), on November 5 the sixth and seventh arrive; and then they will be released one a week until November 26, with episode 10.
The streaming giant invests more and more in sports content in recent times, it already has “All or nothing: Tottenham Hotspur”, “Sir Alex Ferguson: Never Give In” and “Andy Murray: Resurfacing” among its catalog.
