How to be a leader with emotional intelligence in this world?
It is impossible to remain indifferent to the upheaval that our world is experiencing right now; We are inundated with brutal images in the media, we face wars, and we observe a notable lack of humanity and empathy. Sometimes it seems like everything is out of our hands.
But you may wonder, Leslie, what does this have to do with entrepreneurship and leadership? And the answer is that it is intrinsically connected. Today, more than ever, we need leaders capable not only of developing innovative business models or boasting high IQs, like Einstein or Elon Musk, who is presumed to have an IQ of around 155 points.
IQ in Mexico and Spain
If we compare the average IQ in Mexico, which is 88 points, and in Spain, which reaches 93.9, we could feel at a disadvantage. But it is crucial to note that, according to the information provided by Lynn and Becker in “The Intelligence of Nations” (2019), published by the Ulster Institute for Social Research in London, GB, the measurement of IQ is not constant between countries. Furthermore, the IQ is calculated so that the global average is always 100, regardless of geographic location.
Therefore, IQ measurements do not necessarily encapsulate a person’s comprehensive ability to think, innovate, or lead. In this context, emotional intelligence emerges as a vital characteristic for leadership today in any country.
IQ vs. Emotional Intelligence: What’s the difference?
It’s important to understand the differences: Intelligence quotient (IQ) refers to our cognitive abilities, such as the ability to learn, reason, and solve problems. On the other hand, emotional intelligence (EQ) is related to our ability to understand, interpret and manage our own and other people’s emotions. Although IQ has historically been an indicator of success, recent research suggests that EQ also plays a critical role.
Empathy, resilience, adaptability and humanity are equally, if not more, crucial to navigating through the challenges we face today. And yes, they can be developed and strengthened, they are not reserved for the “geniuses” or the gifted. We all have a role to play, and every contribution, no matter how small, counts.
A comprehensive analysis by Preethi Balamohan and Dr. S. Gomath from Vellore Institute of Technology and Business School in India effectively highlights the importance of Emotional Intelligence. According to their study, there is a positive correlation between emotional intelligence and various factors critical for personal and organizational growth. It was demonstrated that emotional intelligence is a crucial element to analyze, modify and channel individual behavior, positively influencing effectiveness in individual, group, leadership and marketing contexts. This is detailed in his post. “Emotional Intelligence – Its Importance and Relationship with Individual Performance, Team Effectiveness, Leadership and Marketing Effectiveness” (2015).
Sailing through the storm…
To delve even deeper into the topic, I want to highlight an additional study by Julia Sjöström and Malin Wedin Olsson from Lund University in Sweden, titled “Navigating Through the Storm: The Managerial Role and Leadership During a Crisis” (2021). This work focuses on deeply understanding managerial work and its relationship with the nature of leadership in the context of a social crisis. The research was formulated around a central question: How do managers interpret their own role during a crisis and what implications does that have for leadership practices? The study explores the challenges and adaptations that are inherent to leadership in times of crisis, and highlights the importance of Emotional Intelligence as an indispensable tool in difficult times, similar to those experienced during the pandemic and that are reflected today in the global crisis we face.
Riding the emotional roller coaster: Tools for effective leadership
Being an entrepreneur is a roller coaster of emotions and even worse when the global scenario is not so favorable, that is why adaptability and resilience have become very important tools, each leader faces the task of not only understanding but also managing effectively. emotions, both your own and those of your team.
A common denominator that I have noticed among the financially successful entrepreneurs I know is the awareness that, although much of what happens in their business life is not under their control, there are three aspects that they can manage: their emotions, the treatment of their employees and their insatiable desire to increase customer satisfaction.
To take the first steps towards leadership with emotional intelligence, it is necessary to carry out deep reflection.
