Johnny Depp is currently very busy with a new trial against Amber Heard (‘Aquaman’), his former partner. That legal battle is not something that particularly interests us -we have already reviewed how his career has sunk mainly because of it-, but it is a statement that the actor has made in it about Jack Sparrowprobably the most mythical character he has played throughout his career.
Depp’s words
The protagonist of ‘Black Mass: Strictly Criminal’ has highlighted from a 2018 article announcing his departure as Sparrow from the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ franchise that “I wasn’t aware of it, but I’m not surprised. It had been two years of constant comments around the world that I was a woman batterer. So I’m sure Disney was trying to cut ties to be safe. The #MeToo movement was in full swing at the time“.
Of course, the actor stressed that Disney did not remove his character from the amusement parks neither “They stopped selling Jack Sparrow dolls. They didn’t stop selling anything. They just didn’t want there to be something behind me to find“.
Nevertheless, the really important question in this case is when they asked him “If Disney came to you with $300 million and a million alpacas, nothing on earth would make you work with Disney again on a ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ movie? Correct?“, to which Depp replied under oath “That’s right“.
The truth is that we had all lost hope in a possible return of the mythical Jack Sparrow in ‘Pirates of the Caribbean 6’, but we could hardly receive a most definitive confirmation than the one Depp just gave us.
