In November we will witness Wish: The power of wishes. This feature film will celebrate Disney’s 100th anniversary and, as such, will be a film that will honor the legacy of previous classics from the mouse studio. But the villain of wishthe Magnificent King, will be a standout compared to other Disney villains.
In interview with ScreenRantChris Buck and Fawn Veerasunthorn, directors of wish,, shared why Magnificent is a villain that can become as iconic as the Disney classics, while having qualities that make him unique.
“Magnificent was born from our desire to have a villain that you knew was a villain from the start. and that you could love to hate him throughout the entire movie. Which is some of our favorite Disney villains,” Buck shared. “Even the name Magnificent comes from, well, he is basically a narcissist. So of course he would call himself Magnificent. Although it was also a small reference to Maleficent, see? […] We had fun with it.”

Likewise, the directors confessed that the choice of Chris Pine (Star Trek) as the voice actor for the Magnificent King was due to the actor’s profile. That is, Pine usually plays “good” heroes and characters in the projects in which he appears, whether Dungeons and Dragons (2023), Wonder Woman (2017) or Star Trek (2009). It’s unusual to think of him as a “bad guy,” so the directors played with that aspect.
“Chris Pine brought a lot of charm and comedy to this character because we want to build a bad guy. We want people to feel conflicted ‘Do I hate him or do I love him?’ And that is the line we try to walk properly all the time. So Chris brought that sensitivity of ‘I admire that person’. He is a king, but, wow, he is very bad. But it’s also something interesting. So we gave him a juicy origin story. and what [Chris Buck y yo] What we love is that we see the descent of this king into the villain he becomes throughout the film,” shared Veerasunthorn.
As we see in the trailers, the Magnificent King is the sole repository of the wishes of the people of the Rose Kingdom. In exchange, he grants them only those wishes that he claims “are good for them.”
