clothing stores Stores Renner and Youcom launched in Brazil through a partnership with Abrapa (Brazilian Association of Cotton Producers) of the SouABR program (Sou de Algodão BrasileiroResponsible) three models of women’s jeans 100% tracked by blockchain.
These new Jean models will be tracked through their entire production cycle with blockchain technology, from cotton farming to garment making. According to the parties involved in this initiative, authenticity will be ensured and any change in the value chain will be avoided by digitizing each piece and making it more auditable, thus allowing access to review its trajectory through a QR code printed on the labels.
Henry Costa, Product Director of Lojas Rennerexpressed that this initiative showed the commitment to the “responsible fashion” achieving a way that customers will also make increasingly conscious decisions. “This project demonstrates that it is possible to reconcile fashion, innovation and sustainability to give greater transparency to the production process from start to finish, while allowing us to engage and positively influence suppliers and partners in our ecosystem”said.
“With this pioneering action, we not only guarantee that the piece was produced in accordance with good socio-environmental practices, but we also give our client wide visibility. Before reaching people’s closets, each piece will have its entire history duly recorded”Costa added.
For its part, the president of Abrapa, Julio Cézar Busatocommented the following: “In 2012, a single certification protocol was created for cotton farms in Brazil. It is a long way to be able to bring this certification to the palm of the hand of the consumer, who is more demanding. With the SouABR program, we deliver what you ask for: socio-environmental responsibility and traceability.”
In this sense, they reported that the certification provided by Abrapa to cotton farms has 183 verification items, distributed on eight fronts, including, for example, employment contract and decent conditions; veto any type of discrimination; worker health and safety; and good environmental preservation practices. It should also be noted that together with the startup Ecotrace, the development of this digital traceability solution aimed at the textile sector, including yarns, fabrics, clothing and retail, was also achieved.
