James Cameron talked about Marvel, DC and their characters. For the director, the heroes who participate in these films do not have very well developed narrative arcs, since they never show that they are involved in natural human relationships.
This was stated in an interview with New York Times (via Variety), in which he spoke extensively about the love bond between Jake Sully and Neytiri, the main characters of his epic sci-fi Avatar: The Path of Waterwhich is about to be released.
In Cameron’s words, the relationship between the two works because they trust each other, an issue that was raised from the first film. Now that they are parents in this new installment, that trust remains and grows quite a bit because they are rooted in reality.
What does James Cameron think of Marvel and DC?
The director says that, as a father, he himself has experienced all of this and wanted to capture it in his film. Speaking on this subject, the person in charge of terminator He took the opportunity to deal the blow to the comic book characters. This said:
“When I watch these big, spectacular movies – I’m looking at you, Marvel and DC – it doesn’t matter what age the characters are, they all act like they’re in college. They have relationships, but they don’t really have them. They never hang up their spurs for their children. The things that really ground us and give us power, love, and purpose? Those characters don’t experience it, and I think that’s not the way to make movies.”
This isn’t the first time James Cameron has complained about superhero movies. Already in 2017, when it premiered Wonder Womangave his opinion on the conception that Hollywood has of the Amazon played by Gal Gadot.
“All the self-congratulations that Hollywood has done for Wonder Woman have been so wrong. She’s an objectified icon and it’s just old macho Hollywood doing the same old thing. I’m not saying I didn’t like the movie, but for me, it’s a step backwards.”
To which the director, Patty Jenkins, replied:
“James Cameron’s lack of ability to understand what Wonder Woman is, or represents, for the women of the world is not surprising, because, although he is a great filmmaker, he is not a woman.”
