The ex-head of PlayStation US, Jack Trettonoversaw the launch of the Play Station Vita in our region, and considers that it is one of the technologies that seemed very good to him but did not have the necessary level of support from Sony. The PS Vita hit the market in 2011, but in 2014 Jack Tretton abandoned his position at PlayStation.
The Play Station Vita it was the successor to the PSP but was considerably less successful, so it was discontinued in 2019 and it seems that Sony has no plans to release another portable console. In a recent interview with Axxios, Tretton said that the PS Vita was one of the orphaned products by Sony.
There were certain technologies that I thought were good but didn’t have the level of support that I needed… I think the PSP was incredibly successful… but the Vita was a good machine at a time when very few people felt they needed a dedicated handheld.” .

In addition to the PlayStation Vita, among the technologies that Jack Tretton cites as lacking in support is PlayStation VR, which wasn’t released until after he left PlayStation. “You come up with new technologies to present to industry and consumers. In an interview with IGN in 2017, Jack Tretton had said that the PlayStation Vita was a great machine but it had come too late, as he believed that consumers were no longer looking for a dedicated handheld gaming device. However, the incredible success of the Nintendo 3DS tells us otherwise.

Even Nintendo seems to think that the public is no longer looking for a handheld gaming device like they used to several years ago, which is why they are betting on the Nintendo Switch and its hybrid concept.
