- Although a brain abscess is too rare in pediatric patients, an accurate diagnosis was obtained through a simple and contrasted tomography.
- The first symptoms that the patient developed were fever, nausea, headache and vomiting, for which the initial suspicion and treatment was a gastrointestinal infection.
- The young woman has recovered satisfactorily from neurosurgery and has even regained mobility on the left side of her body, which she had lost due to the injury.
Within Medicine there are always success stories that deserve to be disseminated. Thanks to the sum of efforts and teamwork, it is possible to obtain satisfactory results that translate into lives saved. The most recent case occurred with a pediatric patient who was detected with a extensive brain abscess that put his integrity at risk.
account of what happened
In this sense, thanks to a successful neurosurgery, specialists from the National Medical Center (CMN) “20 de Noviembre” of the Institute of Security and Social Services for State Workers (ISSSTE) managed to remove the extensive brain abscess from a three-year-old girl. After the intervention, she is recovering satisfactorily and has even recovered mobility on the left side of her body, which she had lost due to the injury.
In this regard, the general director of the Institution. Pedro Zenteno, affirmed that everything was possible thanks to the dedication and dedication of the health professionals of the new ISSSTE. He added that they are the ones who put expertise, efficiency and human interest in saving the life of the rightful community in need.
The neurosurgeon assigned to the hospital and in charge of leading the operation, Cuauhtémoc Gil Ortiz-Mejía, reported that the patient’s mother, Professor Adela Martínez Trejo, reported that the girl began with symptoms on March 29 of this year. The first symptoms she developed were fever, nausea, headache and vomiting, for which the initial suspicion and treatment was a gastrointestinal infection.
As the days passed, the patient did not respond to treatment and her symptoms worsened with brain inflammation. So she was referred from her clinic to the General Hospital of Queretaro and later to the CMN “20 de Noviembre” for suspicion of a malignant brain tumor, since a brain abscess is extremely rare at this age.
“The girl entered this National Medical Center on April first. We did a simple and contrasted tomography, where we observed a brain lesion on the right side of the frontal lobe that explains the loss of strength and decreased mobility that she presented in the hemibody on the left side ”.
Dimensions of brain abscess
The brain lesion was very extensive, measuring five centimeters along its longest axis, four in height, and four in thickness. Due to his size, on Wednesday, April 5, he underwent the surgical procedure duly planned for his removal.
During surgery it was confirmed that the diagnosis was an infectious abscess and not a malignant tumor, which decreased the risk for the patient.
“We delimit the surgical approach very well so as not to injure the compressed motor area. With large syringes we extracted a large amount of purulent fluid from the lesion and as we aspirated it, the brain decompressed and recovered its normal heartbeat and pressure.
Subsequently, the capsule containing the liquid was removed, thus preventing the brain abscess could reform.
Currently, the little girl has already been discharged to continue her rehabilitation at home and maintain her monitoring and care in the outpatient clinic. She has regained mobility and is doing very well.
