Our Lady of Guadalupe, why is it celebrated on December 12?
Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin, also known as Juan Diego, was a Chichimeca peasant and Marian visionary. According to Catholic tradition, he was the Chichimeca indigenous from New Spain who witnessed the appearance of the Virgin of Guadalupe in 1531.
This character was dedicated to selling petates in Tlatelolco. On December 9, he was going to mass at that site and passed by Cerro del Tepeyac at dawn, when he heard a voice that called his name. When he climbed to the summit, he met the Virgin Mary, who ordered him to go to Bishop Fray Juan De Zumárraga and ask him to build a temple in her honor on the site as Church for Our Lady of Guadalupe.
The story tells that Juan Diego returned to Cerro del Tepeyac on the afternoon of the same day 9 to make the announcement that no one had believed his message from Our Lady of Guadalupe.
“I beg you very much and strictly command you, that tomorrow you go again to see the Bishop. And make him hear my will very clearly, so that he can build my temple that I ask of him,” the Virgin told Juan Diego, according to tradition.
This character returned the following day, December 10, to the house of Fray Juan De Zumárraga who requested a test to verify that his word was real. When Juan Diego returned to Cerro del Tepeyac, the Virgin told him to return the next day to the same place to give him the sign the priest requested.
However, Juan Diego did not appear on Cerro del Tepeyac on December 11, because his uncle Juan Bernardino became seriously ill, according to tradition.
It was not until the early morning of December 12 when Bernardino asked Juan Diego to go to the Convent of Santiago Tlatelolco to bring a religious to confess him. On the way to the site, Juan Diego avoided going through Cerro del Tepeyac, although the Virgin ended up appearing to him at the base of the mountain.
The story goes that the Virgin guaranteed him that his uncle would recover and sent Juan Diego to the summit of Cerro del Tepeyac where the signal requested by the bishop awaited him.
“My dearest son: these different flowers are the proof, the sign that you will take to the Bishop. On my behalf, you will tell her to please see my desire in her, and with that, execute my will, ”he said.
Finally, Juan Diego took the flowers that he collected in his cloak to the bishop’s house. Tradition tells that when he displayed them in front of the priest, the image of the Guadalupe’s Virgin appeared drawn on his tilma, a cloth that remains to this day in the Basilica of Guadalupe.
