The well-known rivalry between iphone and Android can provide very interesting data on the economic and social dynamics of a city. For this reason, it is more than interesting to see a map that shows in which areas of Mexico City (CDMX) they prefer the Apple smartphone and in which those with the Google system dominate.
the cartographer Sasha Trubetskoya graduate of the University of Chicago, produced a series of maps indicating the use of one operating system or another in different cities.
The young man, who also describes himself as a data scientist and designer on his website, posted several of these on his Twitter account, including one from the Mexican capital.
At first glance, the popularity of the iPhone in the south and west of CDMXwhile Android is the favorite in the north and east. However, if observed in detail, the image provides a large amount of much more curious data.
Although Trubetskoy’s maps date from 2019, it seems that the distribution of users has not changed much. A Mexican geographer took up the illustration created by Sasha to explain it in detail in a TikTok video that quickly went viral.
In which parts of CDMX are there more iPhones or Androids?
The tiktoker, named Alfonso Arteaga, points out that the iPhone predominates in the Benito Juárez and Miguel Hidalgo mayors, where Polanco and “especially Las Lomas are, which is an area of people with money,” he commented.
It is also the favorite in Álvaro Obregón, especially in San Ángel and Santa Fe, which is home to the Iberoamericana, Anáhuac and Tec de Monterrey universities.
Although the eastern part of CDMX is mostly Android, Arteaga highlights “a little red dot, which is the International Airport of Mexico City”, where a concentration of Apple equipment is noticeable.
In Ciudad Universitaria (UNAM), the use of both smartphones is balanced: close to half have an iPhone and the other half are ‘team Android’.
On the other hand, it indicates that “in the Ecatepec area there is a clear use of Android.” In the south of CDMX, its presence is notable in Pedregal and Santo Domingo.

Arteaga explains that Trubetskoy generated the maps by taking 15.3 million connection points in 24 hourss, which were obtained from closed APIS. If users opened any app on their smartphone from a given location, it would record which information system they had used and send that information back.
The American cartographer also produced maps of ‘iPhone vs. Android’ for other Mexican cities, including Monterrey, San Luis Potosi, Culiacán, Torreón and Saltillo. These can be purchased in their online store in high-quality digital format, so you can look for your cologne ‘calmly’.
