The Xbox Series X|S is the perfect generation for everyone who wants to experience the long history of this company. Thanks to backward compatibility, both physical and digital, it is possible to enjoy titles like the original Halogoing by Red Dead Redemptionuntil gear 5 without any problem. However, there is always room for more, and it was recently revealed that it is possible to run the Windows 98 operating system on these two consoles.
Recently, Alex Battaglia, a member of Digital Foundry, shared a video where we can see an Xbox Series X and S running with Windows 98, providing access to games such as half life Y quake. It has been mentioned that this was a reality thanks to the DOSBox Pure kernel of the RetroArch emulator recently received official support for this old operating system. The result is so impressive that there is even emulated support for 3dfx Voodoo Graphics, and it can even be accessed in other PC applications.
However, not everything is perfect, as it is mentioned that control setup is quite complicated. Let’s remember that although the Series X|S has mouse support, it is quite limited. Along with this, the installation process is somewhat cumbersome, and the animations still show a couple of errors.
Without a doubt, a very interesting experiment that is well worth trying. On related topics, Games With Gold will stop receiving Xbox 360 games. Likewise, all of this is coming to Game Pass.
Editor’s Note:
The idea that an Xbox Series X|S can run Windows 98 without too much trouble shows how far we’ve come in the last few decades. Sure, this probably won’t appeal to many, but at least it makes it clear that there’s a lot of interest in having old experiences today.
