In this apartment in Barcelona, life revolves around a patio. A room full of outdoor furniture -practical and beautiful- and many plants that transform it into a very urban Mediterranean oasis.
The apartment is located in a 1769 building in the Gothic quarter of Barcelona, in George Orwell Square, in the heart of the city. The reform of its 50 m2 of patio and 150 m2 of interior has been totally respectful and careful with each one of the structural elements, respecting the arches and stone walls, the wooden beams and the frescoes of the main façade that overlook the square. In fact, the interior designer Daniel rotmensch responsible for its reform confirms that “During the restoration and reform process we were accompanied by the Department of Heritage of the Barcelona City Council. It was a long, laborious and quite entertaining process.
The reform project has been comprehensive. Its interior design and furnishing has been commissioned by study Daniel Rotmensch In collaboration with the Cult Interior Design furniture store.
In addition to respecting the original structures and elements, one of the main objectives has been to adapt the space to current comforts. Regarding its distribution, all the project revolved around the exterior patio where the main rooms look (living room, dining room, kitchen and master bedroom) in such a way that the exterior is an active part of the rooms that take advantage of the light, silence and serenity provided by the patio.
As explained by Irene Blanco from Culto Interior Design “One of the most striking things when entering thehe home is the contrast between the frenetic activity of the street and the feeling of a haven of peace inside; the dark streets of an intricate neighborhood and the luminosity of the interior thanks to a large patio. This would be the backbone of the project. Find a way to enhance this feeling of an oasis. A Mediterranean oasis, of course.”
The feeling of oasis has been almost the leitmotif of the project and it has also been moved to the interior with a neutral-based interior in which the furniture and lighting proposal by Culto Interior Design and Daniel Rotmensch, based on the combination of high-level Italian contemporary firms such as Meridiani or Capellini, and nationals such as Bover or Sancal, which manage to give a fresh and Mediterranean atmosphere.
The backyard
It is the main room of the house and has been used to the maximum. The premise of the project has been to bring life to the outside, which is why the space was organized into two zones: the Lounge, for multipurpose use as outside lounge which has a large sofa, two armchairs, a coffee table and an elegant lounger, as well as side tables and a fun lamp.

And on the other hand, the dining area with a large table for eight guests under a wood and cane pergola adorned with vegetation, a verbena garland and a set of marine lamps. On an aesthetic level, a classic appearance has been sought that would take us to the patios of the Mediterranean coast.
The vegetation
The Mediterranean oasis is achieved by taking into account, when choosing the vegetation, aspects of environmental sustainability and easy maintenance. The adaptation of the plants to the space, both aesthetically and functionally, was paramount. were chosen native species adapted to the climate of the city and according to the solar and humidity characteristics of the patio. In the lounge area we can see a large olive tree and some Kentias. In the dining room, flowering plants and hanging succulents stand out.
The pots from artisan manufacturers from l’EmpordàThey just gave the final touch. The combination of different materials, shapes and sizes were key to achieving an organic sensation that spoke of the passage of time, that communicated spontaneity and personality.
Inside
The house has four bedrooms (three small and one main suite) and four bathrooms. The connection of the interior spaces is made through the patio and the neutral colors in raw and gray that unify the different spaces although each room plays with a touch of color with its own character. For example in the living room the shades are ocher and toasted and in the olive green dining room and kitchen.
In the interiors it seems that the motif of the oasis of the exterior continues with the search for calm, bright rooms where you can enjoy visual tranquility, without too many elements and with clean and emphatic forms, like the building. An example is the kitchen in black and white, without handles and plain furniture, ensuring a neutral and timeless combination. The color is provided by the dining room chairs.
The living room is another example. With the right elements, predominantly in white and raw, both in the upholstery, the carpet and the lamps such as the sculptural Capellini Big Shadow lamp.

In the window, the net curtain helps filter direct light, achieving a calm and bright atmosphere. It is the decorative elements that provide the touch of color, modulating the room between ochres, gold. A small suspended chest of drawers, curtains, cushions and two large drawings in earthy colors preside over the room which, in turn, is complemented by natural fiber baskets and the Bosa harlequin to give a touch of humour.
The bedrooms
The Main bedroom It has a clearly feminine essence. Decorated with a unique wallpaper, it is presided over by the spectacular Bover Mediterranean lamp that symbolizes an ode to Mediterranean light, breeze and scent. A Coquettish pink velvet armchair by Sancal provides a fresh, laid-back touch, and the clean-lined en-suite bathroom vanity with mirror by Blink by Stellar Works finishes off the feminine touch.
The individual rooms also reflect the essence of those who inhabit them. Each of them has a wallpaper that defines the character, they even have their own name: Science, art and surf depending on the wallpaper motif.
