After eight years of absence, director Luis Estrada is finally back. And how could it be otherwise, he will tell us a story of the Mexican idiosyncrasy that aims to go to the core of some of the most lacerating problems in our country; yes, without abandoning the inevitable humorous tone of his emblematic tragicomedies. The movie in turn is Hurray Mexico!a title that presumes the shelter of Netflix and that it plans to release within its catalog in the fall of 2022.
What is it about?
Upon learning of the death of his miner grandfather, Pancho travels with his family to the town of “La Prosperidad”, where he meets his relatives again and chaos is unleashed by the inheritance.
Hurray Mexico! It has been described as “a metaphor for an entire country” that casts questions on the values, aspirations and culture of Mexicans. On the other hand, the heart of the film promises to be in the family: that “little personal hell to which we all belong” (via).
Its first advance anticipates the clash between two worlds, or rather, two completely disparate socioeconomic levels: a wealthy family (“fifis and conservatives”, one of the characters would say) that ends up in a most traditional and picturesque little town. From the film, its belonging to the classic comic subgenre of fish out of water is perceived. But of course, being the same director of the perfect dictatorship, expect a good dose of social commentary, violence and black humor. In an official statement, Netflix lists it as “an epic and funny political satire.”
“It is my most ambitious film in terms of creativity, production and cast”, explains Luis Estrada. “I intend to make a very stark and funny portrait of my vision of the country in which we are living, which, thanks to intolerance, is taking us to places where we should not go.”
According to the same filmmaker, his fifth feature film will be cruel to three of our essential institutions: family, religion and political power.
With a script co-written by Estrada and his inseparable collaborator Jaime Sampietro, Hurray Mexico! It was shot in the second half of 2021, in different locations in San Luis Potosí; among them, the mining population Real de Catorce.

about the director
Luis Estrada is an illustrious Mexican filmmaker with thirty years of experience, since in 1991 he conceived Long way to Tijuanaa drama and action film with Pedro Armendáriz Jr. and Daniel Giménez Cacho that earned him an Ariel Award nomination for Best First Film.
By the late 1990s, he would stamp his now famous hallmark of political satire with Herod’s Law (1999), an acclaimed feature film that attacked the PRI regime in our country. later would come A wonderful World (2006), which addresses extreme poverty and government indifference; followed by Hell (2010), a fiction around the gloomy theme of drug trafficking and unstoppable violence; to later reach the perfect dictatorship (2014), a no-holds-barred look at the collusion between corrupt politicians and the media.
Thanks to Herod’s Law Y HellEstrada’s work has twice been awarded the Ariel for Best Director and Best Film.
