The Department of Justice reached an agreement with the Huawei’s CFO Meng Wanzhou, which will allow it to return to China, pending a judge’s approval. Meng was arrested in Canada in 2018 on behalf of the United States for allegedly violate US sanctions against Iran. He has been fighting attempts to extradite her to the United States.
Meng, who is in house arrest while you are out on bail, you will admit to some wrongdoing and in return prosecutors will defer and eventually, bank and wire fraud charges will be dropped. Meng appeared remotely in a federal court Friday afternoon, and the Justice Department said in a document that it will present a “resolution” to the charges against him.
Prosecutors claimed that Meng misled banks in 2013 about Huawei’s connections to Iran. She denied the charges, for which she had faced up to 30 years in prison. Meng’s arrest sparked an international incident. Two Canadians were detained in China just days after Meng’s arrest. The Meng deal could lead to China releasing Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig.
