How much did the thieves steal?
The thieves managed to remove 25 boxes with various objects, decorated with more than 4,000 diamonds, from the museum. The value of the loot is estimated at 113 million euros or more than 120 million dollars.
Inside the loot were objects belonging to the former Polish royal house.
Among the stolen items are a sword with a diamond-encrusted hilt, and a shoulder pad containing a 49-carat white diamond.
They catch suspected culprits
The authorities offered a reward of half a million euros in exchange for clues about the destination of the stolen goods, but they did not obtain results. In the months following the robbery, the police carried out operations to arrest the suspects.
According to the DW, a total of 1,638 police officers were mobilized in various operations in various regions of the country.
The first arrests occurred in Berlin in November 2020, almost a year after the robbery.
Where are the jewels?
These objects, some of which belonged to the Saxon royal family, were long thought to have been lost forever.
But in December 2022, police recovered a “considerable part” of the pieces, valued at 60 million euros, after holding “exploratory talks” with the suspects.
The deal has drawn criticism as prosecutors fear it sends a bad signal to criminals and demotivates police officers.
