Surely you have heard about overlocking and how it makes your processor faster, getting better performance without spending any money. But the truth is that to achieve this you must be very clear about how it is done and that is why we are going to help you.
The clock speed CPU (Central Processing Unit) is how fast the overall operation of the device will be. Depending on what type of processor we have, we can increase the clock speed with some adjustments within the computer. This is what we achieve by overclocking a processor.
That is, by increasing the clock speed, the processor becomes faster and therefore the performance is improved in all PC parameters.
This process, in addition to achieving better overall performance, we will do it without touching anything physical on the processor, something that is also important, since all modifications are by software.
Requirements
As you have read before, we depend on the processor we have to be able to overclock. What we need is that it is unlocked as in all Intel processors that end in K and X, such as a Core i9-9900K.
But not everything stays there, even if it is unlocked we must make sure that the motherboard supports overclock it. The reason is that by making this system to the processor, its energy consumption will be higher and the regular voltage modules must withstand this new situation.
If you have an AMD processor it will almost certainly be unlocked because in the vast majority it is, so it is easy to overclock it. For example, Ryzen processors are all optimal for making this change.
We must also have a well-functioning cooling system and make it effective. Although our components withstand overclocking, by consuming more energy, the heating increases, so it is convenient that the ventilation works in the best possible way so as not to have problems.
In the event that your CPU is already a few years old, we must know that this system slightly shortens processor life, so you must weigh whether or not it compensates you. If your equipment is under warranty, this system will make you lose it, although since it can be removed, it is normal not to send it to technical service with the overclock working.
Overclocking on Intel
Once we know requirements and everything that this system causes, it is time to see how we can do it on Intel processors.
Instead of getting into the BIOS, where many overclocking tutorials are based, we are going to do everything from the program Extreme Tuning Utility from Intel, software explicitly designed for Intel processors.
- We download the software and then we proceed to install it. In this same link we can see a list with the CPUs that are compatible.
- Now that it is installed we must start it to do a system test, to determine CPU performance and temperature.
- Let’s go to option Stress Test which is on the left side, we select CPU Stress Test and we run it for an hour for the app to collect information.
- If the PC was at more than 80 degrees, you should rethink improving cooling or not overclocking. If, on the other hand, you did not exceed that amount, you will have no problem moving forward.
Within the program we will see how there is a Tunning Settings section where we can use the sliders to get increase CPU speed.
We will gradually increase these speeds and do the endurance test again, to find out what the limit of our processor is and thus adjust it in the best way.
Although you can modify the voltage of each coreThis is something that we do not recommend, unless you are a very expert user, since this part is very delicate and we can irreversibly damage the CPU if we make a mistake.
Once he increase in speed is equitable with the endurance testIn other words, that we are not above 80 degrees and that we have gained in performance, it is time to leave the program, to try a powerful game that we play regularly and begin to notice the evolution.
Overclocking at AMD
Fortunately AMD also has its own overclocking tool called Ryzen Master, which they recommend for Ryzen processors as of 2017.
This software is very similar to what we have seen from Intel offering even similar instructions.
- We download Ryzen Master and we proceed to its installation.
- Now we must run stress test built into the app. Note that many AMD Ryzen processors carry a Wraith cooler, which is not sufficient for overclocking. If this is your case, you should put more ventilation or not do anything we are talking about.
- If we meet the premise of being below 80 degrees in the test, it is time to overclock from the Basic view of the application, moving the processor clock in the same way we did with the Intel.
- We must change from Control mode default to Manual so that we can adjust the speeds ourselves. The difference with the Intel tool is that in this case multipliers are not increased, without we increase the speed by 50-100 Mhz.
- Once we finish we give in Apply And let’s not forget that we have to pass the test every time we vary something to know where we are located with respect to the temperature and performance of the processor, by clicking on Try.
- As these parameters vary, if we go to the Advanced view, we will realize that we have all the information in much more detail, becoming somewhat confusing for inexperienced looks.
Something that we must be clear about is that this AMD overclocking disappears as soon as we restart or close the system, so when we return we must do it again. Yes, we can create a profile, so that we just enter Ryzen Master we can directly load the parameters that we have established.
Now that you know how to overclock In both Intel and AMD, it is time to decide if it is what you were looking for to gain greater performance or, if, on the contrary, you are not going to risk something more extra speed. At this moment it depends on each one of you, since the information you already have.
