Do you know what processor you have in your PC? It is important that you know this valuable component and if you consider it necessary to change the thermal paste, we recommend you learn How to change the thermal paste of the processor of my PC? Step by step, a process that we will talk about right now.
Why is it necessary to change the thermal paste?
Once you know what the microprocessor is and what it is for, it is essential that you pay attention to the thermal paste that has been applied on this component. Thermal paste is an element designed to speed up the heat transfer between the heatsink and the processor, helping to keep temperatures under control.
Even so, over time the thermal paste tends to dry out, causing it to gradually lose its qualities to properly transmit the temperature. Given this, it is essential to replace it with a new thermal paste, a process that we will teach you below
How to change the thermal paste of my PC processor? Step by Step
The process to change the thermal paste of the computer is quite simple, you just have to take into account certain aspects. Also, make sure you have a screwdriver, thermal paste, cloth/cloth, and rubbing alcohol to begin the process.
Remove the heatsink
The processor heatsink and fan, is the one that, as its name indicates, will dissipate all the heat from the CPU. It’s a critical piece, as without it the CPU would get too hot and it just wouldn’t work.
In the same way, as we mentioned before, over time it becomes necessary to change the thermal paste, the first step to follow for this process is to remove this heatsink. This process is straightforward, assuming you have a common heatsink.
In most circumstances, heatsinks have four screws, all you have to do is unscrew each one carefully, after which you should be able to remove it without any problem.
In the same way, you must disconnect the heatsink from the motherboard, in order to clean it later, as you can see in our guide.
Remove the processor from the motherboard socket
This is the process that terrifies most newbies, in any case, if done properly it shouldn’t pose any problems. Removing the CPU is usually quite simple, since in most circumstances regardless of the manufacturer (Intel or AMD) the procedure is similar.
You will find a small lever that is hooked to the motherboard, you just have to press it down slightly and naturally it will give and you can lift it. As you can see, after this the compartment in which the processor is located will rise, with which you can now remove it.
You must be very careful with the pins, which depending on the processor brand will be found either on the motherboard or on the CPU itself. Do not touch them and do not impose force on them at all.
Eliminate old thermal paste
Before putting new thermal paste in your processor, it will be necessary to remove the traces of the old one. This can be done using a piece of cloth lightly moistened with rubbing alcohol.
Use the cloth and gradually remove the traces of thermal paste from the processor, do it until there is nothing left. Keep in mind that this process must also be done on the heatsink.
Put the processor back on the motherboard
Once the processor is clean, put it back inside the motherboard, make sure to put it in its correct position, guided by the guides on both the motherboard and the CPU itself, finally fix the processor again.
Apply the new thermal paste to the processor and put the heatsink back
It is time to apply the thermal paste, you can apply it as you wish, that is, using your fingers, with a screwdriver, with paper, etc. The important thing is that you apply the amount necessary to achieve good dissipation.
Don’t overdo it, two small dots of just over half a centimeter should be enough for most cases, putting too much thermal paste is not recommended.
Once you have applied the thermal paste, carefully put the heatsink in its final position and screw until it is perfectly positioned. In the same way, reconnect it to the motherboard, after which you will have finished with the whole process. Make sure to activate all the processor cores from Windows to expand the performance of your PC.
