The second place in terms of mortality was obtained by the section Tuxtla Gutiérrez-Ciudad Cuauhtémoc with 70 deaths, however, this one has a larger extension to Mexico-Querétaro for about 60 kilometers. In third place is the Atlacomuljo-Zapotlanejo section with 51 deaths, but it stands out that its 373.7 kilometers are just over double the highway section in question.
Bernardo Baranda, Latam director of the Institute for Transportation and Development Policies (ITPD), considers that in order to face these figures, it is necessary to have “much stricter” controls of speed and breathalyzer, as well as improvements in infrastructure and signage.
Although the yearbook does not specify from which type of vehicles the accidents occurred, be it cargo vehicles, passenger vehicles or private cars, Baranda considers that the majority were caused by the Freight transport and in some cases, also by the motorcycles.
“The authorities in the country have not taken the correct actions to guarantee a greater state of well-being for the people who circulate on the road…. Cargo trailers on the Mexico-Querétaro highway that exceed the established dimensions and weights make them a constant danger”, adds Baranda in an interview with Expansion.
The Mexico-Querétaro section was not previously a red flag. This it became the section with the highest number of collisions in 2020by adding 320 mishaps and surpassing the Puebla-Córdoba section that registered 291 this year, followed by Querétaro-San Luis Potosí with 239.
