WHAT HAPPENED WITH THE PERUVIANS IN 2023
The season began with 8 Peruvian teams involved in international tournaments. Sport Huancayo It did not go beyond Phase 1, after losing to Nacional de Paraguay. This ‘guaraní’ team would be the rival of Sporting Cristal in Phase 2 and the one he would overcome to later face the group against Huracán de Argentina in the last instance. Irven Ávila’s goal in the discounts of the second leg in Lima put Tiago Nunes’s team in the big party together with the champion Lima Alliance and the runner-up melgar. An important fact: Peru once again had three representatives in the group stage, something that had not happened since 2019, with these same three teams. There is already marked an improvement.
None could get into the round of 16. The one that was closest was Cristal, who reached the last date with mathematical chances. The Rímac team sold their elimination in this tournament dearly after drawing with Fluminense, leader of the group, at the Maracaná. This is how he obtained his passport to the South American Playoffs. Alianza Lima and Melgar, for their part, were in last place in their respective groups and said goodbye to everything. So, Peruvian teams have not surpassed this instance since 2013 (Real Garcilaso).

IN WHAT POSITION DID PERU FINISH THIS YEAR?
Peru did not get a ticket to the round of 16 of Libertadores or Sudamericana, but they did get the chance to play the ‘Suda’ Playoffs with Cristal and Universitario. That is, two of the five cup teams were rewarded. It could be said that the balance is positive if we compare it to previous years. But that is where we wanted to compare how good or bad we are with respect to other countries.
Libertadores Cup 2023
Brazilian teams, as is customary, continue to dominate this tournament. He assured six teams in the round of 16, where the always candidates Palmeiras, Flamengo and now Fluminense are added. The only one who couldn’t do it was Corinthians, who will play the South American Playoffs. Argentina, with River Plate and Boca Juniros at the helm, will seek to fight it. Balance sheet
If we put together the general production of the two tables (Libertadores and Sudamericana) and only counting the group stage, the trend tells us that Brazil and Argentina are above the rest internationally. Colombia, Paraguay and Ecuador are below, but fighting and sometimes causing more than one surprise. In the lower zone, so to speak, are Chile, Peru, Uruguay and Bolivia. In the basement is Venezuela, the only country that will not have international competition in 2023. Peru, with a production of 33%, surpasses Uruguay and Venezuela, although the curious thing is that these last two countries will have a representative in the second round of Libertadores (Nacional and Bolívar, respectively)..
