Learn about the effects children suffer when they change their homes and how you can help them adapt to their new home.
It is not only about a new home: when we move houses, especially if it is located in another city or country, we leave loved ones, memories and even customs behind.
Many times adults believe that children, because they are small, do not perceive the changes that a move implies. But the reality is that it affects them much more since the first home is the place where they felt out of danger, their friends met and they were used to being themselves and developing fully.
The little ones also feel stressed before a move because their parents do not consider their opinion: it is true that they are not mature enough to discuss the circumstances under which they are moving. However, they perceive a change of home as an obligation for which they were not taken into account.
If the children are already in school, the anguish generated by the move may be greater, since they will also face entering a new school, having a new teacher and meeting new classmates.
It is normal for children to be rebellious , irascible and even depressed before a change of house, but if this is inevitable, it is necessary to support them to overcome it and adapt fully. For this, we give you the following tips:
Tell them about the plans to move: the important thing is that you do not take them by surprise, that is, you must tell them well in advance.
Ask for their opinion: even if you have made a decision, ask your little ones what they think, so that they do not feel ignored.
Visit your new home days before the move: take a walk in the surrounding areas, eat somewhere nearby and enjoy the parks that are there.
Give priority to your space: arrange your room first so that you feel that this special place was waiting for you. You can also ask them what color or what type of furniture they want for their new room.
Do not break with the schedules: although there are many things to do at the beginning, avoid that your little ones fall asleep too late or miss their classes. It is best to adapt to the daily routine from the beginning.
You will see that very soon your little ones will see their new home as a cozy and happy place.
