It is essential to know the configuration of the network whose structure is based on certain data such as the IP address and DNS. If you wonder how to know the IP address, DNS and the gateway of my router ?, then this article will be very useful for you.
After configuring and installing a router, certain concerns may arise related to the network of our system. Below we will answer some of these questions.
How do I know the IP address, DNS and the gateway of my router?
The operation of the Internet depends on some elements that are configured in order to allow connection between devices. Such is the case of the IP address, DNS and the gateway which allow identifying the equipment and its way of connecting to the modem or router.
Next, we present all the information you need to know to access the network configuration from your computer.
What is an IP address?
IP stands for Internet Protocol and is a protocol that identifies users who connect to the network. The IP address is the most common element on the Internet since the websites, routers and the equipment we use for access are identified with this protocol.
There are public and private IP addresses. The first ones are assigned by a company to identify you during the connection. These addresses can be fixed, that is, they do not change at any time, or dynamic if they change after a certain time elapses.
On the other hand, an IP address is private when it identifies the users of a private network that connects multiple devices. Private IP addresses depend on the size of the network: a class A IP is intended for large networks, class B IPs for medium networks and class C IPs for small networks.
You can extend what has been said before by reading the following guide in which we will tell you what the TCP/IP protocol is and how it works in the different Internet services and networks.
What is a DNS server?
DNS is the acronym for Domain Name Server and refers to the set of domains that exist in the network of networks. In this sense, there is a wide network of servers whose purpose is to translate domain names into IP addresses that are understandable by the equipment that connects to the Network.
When you want to access a specific web page, a request is executed and the DNS server receives it to indicate the IP address that resolves the domain corresponding to the site. The query is stored (in the DNS cache) and so you can view the information offered by the web page.
What is a gateway?
The gateway is the means of communicating signals from the computer to the modem or router through the IP address. Thanks to the gateway you can configure the modem to connect to the Internet, set the password for the WiFi signal and control the devices that connect to the network.
Show the IP address, DNS, and default gateway of the router
There are two ways to view the network configuration from the IP, DNS and the gateway: one of them is through the Windows command processor and the other alternative is offered only by the Windows 10 operating system.
Access to network settings via Windows command processor
If you want to view the IP, DNS and the gateway you must access the command processor from the start button and type cmd. In the Windows console, you must type the command ipconfig / all and press the “Enter” button for the system to present the network information.
On the other hand, if you want to access more configuration options, we recommend knowing the best lists of CMD commands for networks, which will allow you to adapt the network according to your needs or solve problems.
From the ” Windows 10 Settings menu ” look on the left of the panel for the option “WiFi or Ethernet”. In this section you must select the section corresponding to your active local network.
Then, the system will show you an additional configuration screen. In this screen all the properties of the network are presented, including the IP address, the DNS and the MAC address of the network card.
Indeed, there will be all the information that we mentioned before, but as you will see we have named the MAC address. Given this, it is important that you know the difference between IP address and MAC address, which will help you better understand the network system.
