It’s going to happen again…
Do you remember that a few years ago the Hollywood writers went on strike demanding more royalties on DVD products? Well, once again they have decided to stop activities, this time in the era of streaming.
The Writers Guild of America announced a couple of days ago that it would go on strike. This after negotiations with the Alliance of Film and Television Producers (AMPTP) failed.
“While we negotiated with the intention of making a fair deal, and while your strike vote gave us the upper hand for some gains, studio responses to our proposals have been wholly inadequate given the existential crisis writers are facing.” the WGA said in a message to members.
What do Hollywood writers want?
The Writers Guild wants several changes to their contracts. These include:
- Increases in compensation for streaming and new media.
- Remove smaller writing rooms where a showrunner and a limited group of writers develop scripts for minimal compensation.
- Increases in contributions to health benefits and pensions
- More control over the work of writers
- With the advent of streaming services, writers say they need a contract that reflects changing times.

According to The Hollywood Reporterstrings like 30 Rock, Breaking Bad, Criminal Minds And till lost they had to cut their seasons back in those years or even change their writing team. This came to affect the fate of these programs due to the change in quality, as was the case with Heroes.

“Writers at all levels and in all genres, whether it’s feature films or television, we are all being devalued and financially taken advantage of by studios,” Danny Tolli, a writer for the series Roswell, New Mexico from the CW told The New York Times. “These studios are making billions in profit and spending billions on content, content that we create with our blood, sweat and tears.”
