Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai announced the merger of two entities with the company to form a separate business unit dedicated to developing the next generation of artificial intelligence (AI) advancements and products.
The new unit, Google Deepmind, was formed by merging Google Research’s Brain team and DeepMind, a London-based AI company that Google had bought in 2014. The aim of the new business unit is to accelerate progress on the company in the development of AI in a safe and responsible way.

Pichai’s intent behind combining Google’s AI talent into a focused team is to “significantly accelerate our progress on AI.” Jeff Dean, Chief Scientist at Google Research and Google DeepMind, reporting directly to Pichai, has been commissioned to create a series of powerful multimodal AI models.

Reflecting on Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s view of AI’s potential to destroy civilization, Pichai clarified the intent behind the creation of the AI-focused unit:
“To ensure bold and responsible development of general AI, we are creating a unit that will help us build more capable systems in a more secure and responsible way.”
Although it has been revealed that further AI developments will be used to improve Google products, the exact details of its application are still unknown at the time of writing.
A recent survey of 11,004 US citizens revealed strong fears of an AI takeover in the workplace.

56% of respondents believe that AI will have a major impact on the US economy, while only 13% of respondents believe that “AI will help rather than hurt” American workers.
